1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) I had posted a little while ago about wanting a Phaeton . I had found a nice 36 Phaeton I was considering and then I heard about a 33 Phaeton that may be for sale . A month ago at our V8 Club swap meet a friend of mine said hey Mike, I sent a guy your way that mentioned he wanted to sell a older restored 33 Phaeton . I said great , how do I get a hold of him ( of course trying to hold back my excitement ). He said I don't know , I just told him where your spot was so I though he would find you . Well , our swap meet was big and I was all over the place so no one found me . I told my friend , c'mon , you can't do that to me , any info at all ?? He said I think the persons name was xxxxxx , and he owned a junk yard in xxxxxxxx . That was all I had and my search began . I was able to track down the owner and gave him a call .He was impressed my stalking skills . I told him hey , it's a 33 Phaeton , I had to !! The car was his fathers car who had lost interest in old Fords a while ago. His son was the keeper of the car and he unfortunately is to busy to do anything with it . They both decided they should sell it . They had owned the car since 1973 .We went and took a look at it and fell in love . I was ablt to beg ,barrow and beg some more and we went and picked it up yesterday . It is a nice old car . Very solid . It has some neat options like 17" Bent Spoke wheels ,Dual temp gauge, Chex amp/oil gauge ,Dunford Firewall tool box , Emergency lever extension handle and a clock mirror(no Ford logo) The car was painted in the late 60's or early 70's . The paint looks ok in pic's and will be a good driver paint job . So far so good, things are only getting better the more I dig . I am not a big fan of the detroit lubricator carbs so I am looking for a 34 manifold and I have a good 94 or 97 carb for it .The DL just seems a little fussy . The top needs a good scrubbing , suggestions ?? Enjoy the pics . We are very excited to have this car now and she will be in the family for a long time .
I just need to add a huge THANK YOU to my wife for putting up with all this non-sense and supporting my hobby !!!!!!! I swear every other word out of my mouth was Phaeton for about the last month !! Ha Ha !! https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15518https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15517https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15516https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15515https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15514https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15513https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15512 |

Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) I don't care what anyone says, I've always admired the '33 more than the '34. I'm very jealous!
A request: Can you please post detail pictures of the Dunford box? I'm sure lots of guys would like precise dimensions to make their own tool box also. |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Persistence pays off. Things do not just drop into your lap, you have to go out and find them.
Well done on the purchase, She's a beaut. Mart. |

side-bar question: is phaeton a two syllable word(fay-ton) or three(fay-a-ton)? Always been curious, just never asked. |

I even enjoyed the Panorama Show. |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Beautiful
|
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Congrats! What a beautiful car!
A question though, I don't know the difference between a '33 and a '34, how can I quickly identify each year? Thanks for your help, I'm really enjoying this forum, and learning a lot. |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Wow!! What a beauty! I personally think the '33 and '34 models are the classiest looking cars of the entire early Ford V-8 era. I usually fall in love with most every one I look at and dream about owning many that I see that are forsale.
I'm hoping you are a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club and will be bringing that '33 to some of the upcoming national meets so we can get a close-up look-see at that beautiful car. |

Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) The grill on a 33 is flatter and the 34 comes out to more of a point. The hood on the 33 has curved louvers and a single latch handle in the middle. I have some of both and it takes a while to get to know the differance until they get side by side. After a while the differances jump right out at you. G.M.

Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Congrats Mike and Amy! She's a nice little car indeed and the pictures dont serve it any justice. That's gonna be real nice to have in up Redmond this year. See ya on sunday.

Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Wow, that is a beauty. We need to see some pics with the top down.
|
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Thank everyone . She is going to be a fun car . The pics makes it look a little nice than it is as far as the body . It is good and solid with no rust any where but it looks like the doors had some mediocre bodywork done in the early 70's . We will fix that someday but for now Drive Drive Drive !!!!

Thanks Dennis , that would be fun to come over and take pics and chat !! Quote:
I do not know the correct answer to this but I always pronounce it (fay-a-ton) Not sure but I guess I should really find out now .Anyone ? Quote:
Ha ! I think I will keep the green for now ;) Quote:
Yes you will :D Quote:
I am not sure why the pics went panoramic on some computers . On my laptop they are panoramic ,on my desk computer they are top to bottom like normal ? weird ? Quote:
Yes I am a member of the V8 club and I am very active with the club .We are planning on bringing the Phaeton to the Redmond national meet 2012 and then maybe the Tahoe national meet 2013. We can't wait ! |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Here are more pics . The car has a lot of accessories . I guess the previous owner liked accessories . I believe this car was bought at the 1973 V8 Club National meet in San Diego . I will try and find out some more history on it for the fun of it .
Here are pics of the Dunford box . If anyone needs dimensions or more info just PM me . It is pretty neat ! https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15535 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15534https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15532https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15531 It has an original 3.54 Rear end https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15530 A six blade fan that according to the book was a 33/34 accessory https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=15533 The accessory gauges. Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) 1932 V8 ....................
You can catch a bunch of photos of my unrestored 1934 phaeton in one of my albums. MIKE :) |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) I checked your car out top to bottom as I was trying to buy this one . You have a great car there . Your pics were very inspirational !! Do you have a top boot for your car ?
|
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Quote:
Yes, I have the original top boot. It is on the car, in the pictures. It was in a "relic" condition, so I sewed it up a little and contact-cemented canvas to the back side. I also have the original curtains, in their original pouch. MIKE :) |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Nicely done! I hope you have a lot of fun with it. Maybe I'll see you in Tahoe. Keep us up to date, thanks for the photos.

Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) side-bar question: is phaeton a two syllable word(fay-ton) or three(fay-a-ton)?
Quote: side-bar question: is phaeton a two syllable word(fay-ton) or three(fay-a-ton)? I do not know the correct answer to this but I always pronounce it (fay-a-ton) Not sure but I guess I should really find out now .Anyone ? Phaeton is pronounced as a two syllable word, Phae- ton (Fay-ton) Phaeton is from the Greek language. Phaeton was the son of Helios (the personification of the sun) Phaeton also appears in the Greek language as a play written by one of the greastest playwrites in ancient history, Euripides. In the modern era the name Phaeton was given to a style of horse drawn carriage which had four wheels. Later the name was attached to an open top automobile. Again, congratulations on your new car. Personally I like them to have a lived in look, with age they acquire an honesty that cannot easily be faked, if she were mine I wouldn't change a thing, and thank you for the photos. |
Re: 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :) Brubacker,
The word is usually pronounced with three syllables. 'Phay eh ton' or something similar. The automotive usage is derived from a particular horse drawn configuration; a light high wheeled carriage. That in turn was derived from the name of a Greek God. Today it is taken to mean a four door vehicle with folding top and side curtains. Ford's last one was 1938 I believe. Regards Henry |
