What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I have uncovered FIVE holes on the firewall that were filled with body filler...Does anyone know what could've been mounted there? Three across the top and two below, forming a W pattern. Lets' test your knowledge here and see if you know! thanks
Once again I am not able to upload a picture...this site sucks! |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Pics would help a lot :)
What size are the holes 1/8 or 3/4 |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Why can't you upload pictures:confused:

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? No, this sucks http://schoolworkhelper.net/wp-conte...um-Cleaner.jpg.
It could have been a: Headlight relay, Water type heater accessory, Battery mount, A fuse block, a bracket for carrying oil or water can. GW |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Most likely a battery tray. A lot of cars had the battery moved to the firewall many years ago. Some argue it should have been there all along, as it is most inconvenient to get at in the original location.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I've seen toolboxes mounted under the hood of more than one Model A. Battery box
is one of the more likely guesses, for sure! |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Several years ago we ran an article in the Model A Times that showed a burglar alarm that attached to the firewall it could have been that.

If you try to post photos from your computer and have not downsized them, it will just hang up and not tell you why. 800 pixels wide is the largest it will take on thumbnails. MIKE :) |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Is it your intention to find and reinstall whatever? I have a firewall that had 48 extra holes. Walk thru the auto parts store and select one of each!!

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? 1 Attachment(s)
Battery box.
I wonder what was mounted on my son's firewall? |

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? 1 Attachment(s)
Three holes across the top and two beneath. The holes are inset and almost appear to have accepted a tapered secrew head. Nothing looks as if it mounted inside and the car was obviously painted after the holes were filled with filler. Any helpful suggestions appreciated. And YES i would like to reinstall what ever it was to take it back to the correct time period. To answer a simple question in advance I would ask the original owner but he passed away years ago.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Originally nothing was mounted there.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Looks like bullet holes. Unfortunately many jerks used old cars for targets.
|
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I'm not aware of any bullets that grind the inside lip off after they make impact. I understand they are NOT original but if the accessory is cool enough I want to locate one and install. The idea of a tool box or OIL/WATER/GAS cans is intriguing enough for me to persue a plausible answer

Reminds me of that quote from 2001 space Oddysey "My God, it's full of stars" (lol) That's not a firewall, it's a sieve to kep the larger engine parts from coming into the cabin in case of catastrophic failure :) - Dave |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Judging by the rust and the size I wonder if it was for a battery which would put it close to the starter.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I'd guess a target.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I think it really is a "W" letter mounting place, like in "Wolksvagen".... :)
|
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I can't think of anything that would be nounted on the inside of the firewall, as they would interfere with the drivers legroom...
It is odd that the holes do appear to be punched rather than drilled, and if there were significant weight, the holes would be tapered outwards (as if there were carriage bolts tightened on the mystery object). I vote for battery box (note the battery base would be closer to the 2 lower holes than to the top 3, due to the radiator rod placement, so likely a box or basket rather than tray) or a toolbox of some sort.. Bullet holes are a possibility, but these do seem to be pretty a pretty regular pattern.. Maybe an old farmer did not have a drill to mount his battery basket, so used old betsy to put holes in the firewall? :D It is a mystery... |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? My '29 has a 2"X4" oval area pounded in by a ball pein hammer, directly behind exhaust manifold??? It adds to the MYSTIQUE of the car. Inside, it shows NO signs of a big welded up hole, only some small welded up holes.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I figured it out! Two slugs from a 12 Gauge, two rifle rounds and a pistol. It can't be a battery as it would interfere with the hood.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? That's my vote,
Deer slugs and .38 tim |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? My vote is a battery holder. I believe that the holes were "punched" in not drilled. When they were filled in the backs were ground smooth.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Making a really wild guess, could it be a patch over the indented late 31 firewall on a right hand drive Model A? :>)

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? id say a small toolbox, maybe a toolbox from an old ford tractor,i think its too high for a battery tray.
|
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I'd say most likely a battery box or tool box. But I do have a wilder guess. Does the car have hydraulic brakes or any evidence that it once did - or that the body was on another chassis that did? I'm thinking master cylinder or booster - four mounting bolt holes and one for the pedal rod. Course, there's nothing saying all five holes were for mounting the same thing - could have been different holes for different stuff throughout the last eighty years.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? The top three (across) held a three-prong blivit like this: http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/cog_imposs1/devilsfork.gif The bottom two holes were for the accessory support bracket. |
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? They look metric.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? Blivit? Is that the mount for a after market Roton Blisterflux?
|
Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? I thinks it might have been a water injector or a lubricator. Might have been a gas can used to start the engine and then the car was run on diesel fuel.

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? looks like the mounting bolt pattern for an old vacuum tube type disgronificator..:D

Re: What was mounted on my FIREWALL? My Victoria had a hot water heater mounted on the inside firewall above the steering column at some point in time. That way the heat would blow on the driver. Similar holes.

WOW! Of all of the so-called Model A "EXPERTS" and "HOBBIESTS" out there I'm not at all shocked to see just how many of you jump on the "MOCKING" bandwagon. If You can not offer a useful suggestion just don't offer one at all. You might as well all post your thoughts on sites like VWforum and those alike , with the rest of the immature teens. Here's another pic for you who say it's a series of gun shot holes, let's try to be a bit more optomistic from here on out. A little more history for those who are concerned with the "FILL and PAINT" suggestions, a more accurate time period would've been the early 1950's since the car has been parked indoors since then. An accessory WAS mounted here at one point 60+ years ago and would love to know more about what it could have been. The water heater was the most intelligent suggestion so far.
