Current collector car insurance Can I get some input on current collector car insurance I had insurance with haggerty but they've raised the rates too much I'm looking for agreed value with 500 miles a year maximum driven mileage.

Re: Current collector car insurance I was with JC too, but then they wouldnt accept my "patinad" cars, so I moved to Hagerty, where it was never a problem.
BTW never had a claim in 30 plus years. |

Grundy - can be 'sticky', bang a fender to or from a show, no problem. Random Tuesday AM at a coffee shop, problem. JC Taylor - Sold two years ago to a niche specialty insurance carrier who also owns Condon & Skelly and American Classics Look beyond the insurance provider to see who is their underwriter (covers them). Major claims from Florida storm damage & California fires, we all pay for. |
Re: Current collector car insurance I had Condon & Skelly for years. Changed to Grundy when they were underwritten by Chubb (which they no longer are). Never a claim in 50 years, so no issues to report.

Re: Current collector car insurance Yes, to affirm what Jim stated above, -it does seem like Hagarty has been the best as far as the shop doing the repairs. Generally they ask us to prepare an estimate and they send an Adjuster to be their eyes, and if everything looks legitimate, they approve the repairs. I have not been involved in such the circumstances as Jim mentioned with Grundy, but they have been good to work with. State Farm has been the worst I have ever seen. I presently have a customer's Model-A that was damaged back in December of last year, and SF has also had the estimate since December of 2024, and as of April 11th, 2025 they still have not settled with the car owner.

Lost my 1929 CCPU in the 2018 California wildfires. Hagerty quickly handled my claim, paying the agreed value. No issues, in fact, they contacted me after the claim was paid and inquired if I carried any repair parts or tools in the truck. I sent them a list and to my surprise they sent me an additional $1500. Hagerty went above and beyond. Great company to work with.

Re: Current collector car insurance I’m with Hagerty and am generally happy, but I’ve not had a claim so I can’t speak to that. When I added my ‘31 to the policy that already had my ‘30 they made me send them a photo proving that I had secure storage with hard walls, which I thought was a little pissy of them (I didn’t have to do that with the ‘30). They claimed it was a “California requirement” which sounds like a bunch of bovine feces to me. Could be the underwriter was having a bad day, the customer service rep on the phone (I still remember her name, Julie, and that she spoke clear English) was delightful.

Re: Current collector car insurance just a word of advice- I met a fellow car enthusiast who had his car insured with JC.
It was a 100k stanley steamer. he pulled it completely apart to restore and it burnt to the ground. He wasnt covered at all. Make sure you know what you are getting............... regarding coverage. |

I lost an A when my house burned in March of 2020.Hagerty was zero problems.The rep showed up,and asked if I had parts stored in the cellar with the car(I did).He allowed me the max on the parts.There was probably three times that in there though.The car was about 100 feet from dry ground,it was in an ankle deep puddle of mud,made up of soot,dirt,and the contents of a crushed septic pump.I think he was there to verify the car existed,and that it was a total loss,but he didn't go near it to check the numbers.He said he could determine from where he stood that it was a total loss.He knew I only had one coupe,and he could see it was the came car as in his picture.He assumed I was going to keep it,and said they were going to deduct $765.from my payout.It is still insured with them for $765. It costs nothing,with my other cars,and when I put another body on it I can just send them a picture and up the value.

Re: Current collector car insurance I'm also w/Hagerty, the renewal is in August. Last year the rates were still quite reasonable. Don't have a clue what they will be this year, whether they will be up or not, Just have to wait and see.

Re: Current collector car insurance Just got my renewal,it went up $8. That's because they suggested I up the value of my 30 open pickup.It had been the same value since 2005. I also pay $28.per year for cherished value on four cars.$7.per car per year to keep them at no cost to me in case of a total loss.If I'd had that when my Coupe burned they wouldn't have deducted $765.for me to keep it.It just wasn't available here at the time.

Re: Current collector car insurance Hello, I also have Haggerty never any claims , and also have the 49 Buick insurance. for just value as engine is out . Was only an additional $19.00 to add the 1931 Ford when I bought it .Will get new policy renewal in May so find out if it increased.

Re: Current collector car insurance Had JC Taylor for 23 years. Then they said my cars had to be garaged and within sight. Kinda hard to do when attending a national or any overnight trip. Been with Hagerty for decades. Their service has been great. Had a claim that they took care of immediately. Another situation they covered me at night when I had a car built and the builder's insurance stopped when it left their facility. You might get it cheaper but when you need service and it isn't there, cheap can be expensive. Currently have eight cars and two trailers with them fully covered and not looking back............

Re: Current collector car insurance That company that Brent says is the worst....McKeel sold 15% of his company to them, and gave them board seat(s) (i.e., infulence). I have seen changes. They are not the same company. For one thing, that 15% company is in the business of thinking everyone is out to cheat them so they wanna cheat back. We are a different type of client. I pay my premiums, and hope I never need to make a claim. They need to change their ways.

Re: Current collector car insurance I had Allstate for 10 years and then they dropped the Model A (kept the modern cars). I've been with Hagerty since then -- no problems, but of course, no claims either.

Re: Current collector car insurance I once had J.C. Taylor twenty years ago, but switched to Hagerty after J.C. Taylor would not cover property damages to a '69 Corvette that I had. I did not have a stated value on the car at the time. An unmarried 21-year old Mom with no insurance pulled out from a side street less than fifty feet in front of me and I T-boned her. They said that un-insured/under-insured coverage was for personal injury only - not property damages. Ten years ago or so, there was another young lady that bumped into the rear bumper on our '29 Town Sedan at a traffic light, bending the bumper, bumper arms, bumper extensions, and lightly pushing the trunk into the rear body section. Hagerty made sure that all was put back right and as good as before. More recently, my nephew's emergency brake failed to hold and his '31 slant windshield fordor and as a result, it rolled off into a nearby fence-line and the lower branches on a tree. The repair estimate was $17,000, which Hagerty paid without question. I can't speak to Grundy, but I would say that my experience would suggest staying away from J.C. Taylor - they impressed me as good at accepting premiums, but terrible at paying claims. Best of luck in your search.

Re: Current collector car insurance I have been with the Auto Club for 57 years. It all started when they were the only insurance company that would insure a restored '57 Thunderbird for more than the value of a '57 2 door sedan. They inspected and photographed it and we agreed to a value. They now have a separate division for classic cars. I like them but shop around. Note you get a discount if you also have your daily driver insured by them.

I pay a bit extra for the “Drivers Club” which comes with an excellent magazine, and more importantly, free flatbed towing up to 100 miles, with no limit per year. In the last 3 years while replacing the engine and rebuilding the entire running gear I’ve had it towed at least 8 times. Has paid for itself.

Re: Current collector car insurance We've got Hagerty on the A and the wife's 2004 Tbird. Whenever there is a problem in CA they send out an email on how to file a claim if there is a loss. During the fires they offered their club warehouse for free storage and set up a walk in claims office. Bring the title get your payout. My renewal was just before the fires and was up about 5% from the previous year. I imagine next year there will be a much higher increase to help recover some of their losses. I'll still use Hagerty.
BTW - there is a FREE Model A being offered. It was caught in the fired. I'm not even sure it would be good yard art. That does bring up some problems I saw with the Hagerty policy. It requires that the car be stored in a garage. When the garage burns so does the car. If you look at photos of the wildfires you see cars parked on the street were undamaged or had minimal scorching. |
Re: Current collector car insurance A few years ago a friend was sitting behind his car at a cruise night.His trunk was open,and a couple of guys were walking by.One said,look how they built them back then,and tried to shut the trunk lid.It had s stiff arm,not springs,and he bent it badly.The owner contacted Hagerty the next day,explained it all,and they got the ball rolling.Then he got a call from legal with a few questions.Police report filed? Yes.Was there any altercation between the parties involved,including arguing or yelling? No,and that was backed up by the police report.Turns out if he had gotten in any kind of tussle with the guy,including verbal,everything would be held up until that part was settled.We heard dozens of people say,if that had been me I'd have done this or done that to him.If he'd smacked the guy,the car would be in limbo until the other part was settled.He would not have even been able to pay to have it fixed out of pocket,it would have been evidence in the case.The owner kept his cool,and less than two days later the car was in a restoration shop being worked on.Hagerty took care of it,and said that dealing with the guy that did it was their worry.

Re: Current collector car insurance I'm very pleased with Hagerty as well on all of my Model A's and parts and automobilia. ....but never had any claims.
Remember to get your 5% Hagerty Insurance - Car Club Member discount (if you are a member of the Model A Restorers Club, MARC or AACA for example). The additional Hagerty Cherished Salvage is also reassuring to have and will allow you to keep the car if it is a total loss. I dropped their Drivers Club membership when they stopped offering included towing for my daily drivers as well.....but I unfortunately do not drive my Model A's much. Brad in Maryland |

Re: Current collector car insurance thats todays norm- with all of the claims going on in this country-esp regarding natural disasters.
My home was thoroughly inspected 2 yrs ago- insde and out and thought I was done with the inspections....... they just came around again 2 weeks ago wanting a complete do over. Maybe 100 photos, measurements etc. I believe its nothing more then a ploy to raise my rates. I dont have many choices as my home is over 200 yrs old and many wont insure it. they just want newer homes with little to no risk. |
Re: Current collector car insurance It's just a fact of lfe all over.You might find cheaper for a while,but that won't last.Right now Hagerty has stayed around the same for me,but I expect it to go up.If you make a change at the end of the day you're just changing deck chairs on the Titanic.

Re: Current collector car insurance THirty plus years with Hagerty. No mileage limit, agreed value. No permission needed to drive somewhere over a week end and stay in motels or hotels. As close to your daily driver you can get. Over the years I have driven my old cars from Nor CAl to Portland, Reno, (Hot August nights) Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach. Always stayed in hotels. No having to beg permission. Try that with Taylor and see what their reaction to those moves is.
Also years ago a fellow in San Jose lost his '41 Cadillac high point car in a fire along with many parts. I had a '41 and over a period of a couple of years sold him some of my extras. As part of the claim, he listed the parts. The adjuster wanted to verify the value of some of the parts I had sold him an what my thoughts were on the street value of other parts. I was one of three he consulted. I gave him the values and the fellow got paid for the lost parts. He got the agreed value amount with out drama. In todays' economy classic car insurance is extremely reasonable. Based on the cost of insuring our modern cars, Hagerty, even if they raised my rates by 30% I would still insure with them. My only gripe is these alleged limitations that somehow come up when there is a claim, and then the arguing over getting paid. If a collector car insurance company has an issue the time to speak up is beforehand.
In December I sent Hagerty a letter and a spreadsheet. My phone was a ringin' about a week later. I found something else out, they dislike making replies on clarifications in writing. |
