Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

This thread pertains to 1939 and 1940 Mercury cars. The purpose is to determine if there are enthusiasts who need and would commit to buying (pre-pay) a new windshield seal for these cars. There is basically one manufacturer who produces these quality seals and the last production was close to 20 years ago. If there are enough buyers who would definitely purchase one, it might be worth it for the company to do a run. At this initial stage there are no prices to attach to the commitment, but a realistic "I'm in" is what is needed to move forward.

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

What is the difference between a ford and mercury. I thought ( probably wrongly ) that the only dimensions that were different were 4” from the cowl forwards .

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

The '39 and '40 Mercury's were totally different bodies than the '39 and '40 Fords. The '41-'48 Mercury's did use the same body as the Fords.

You might also ask this question on the Early Ford V-8 Club site and over on the HAMB site.

I have a friend with a 1940 Merc convertible street rod project, would convertibles use the same windshield seal as closed cars?

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

My understanding, and with best research I could do with original parts books, is that 1939 and 1940 Mercury coupes, sedans, and convertibles used the same windshield seal.

Thanks Karl, I will check with my buddy to see if he needs a new seal.

It is amazing. When looking at them side by side, they look similar, but almost everything on the Mercury is longer and/or wider.

Put me down for 3 sets!!!! ALSO could use running board covers too!!!

The 39 Mercury Convertible was made directly from the 39 Sedan Coupe, ie they just cut the tops of the coupes to make them SO they are the same exact car!!!!

Tim Ayers, other than the "most" obvious of parts like a motor or transmission, NOTHING from a Mercury is the "same" as Ford, even some of the most smallest of detail parts, I am constantly amazed at how different they are!!! With 39 & 40's, now a days, you are on a very small Island IF correctness is your goal!!!

Crazy to think that they styled it similarly to the Ford versions, yet made all new and/or different parts for it.

My headache X3, I have two 39's and a 40. I doubt the 40 Conv Sedan will ever get done unless I find a "sacrificial" sedan and the problem with that IS I need a "nice" sedan because being a Conv. Sedan....I need good floors amongst other bits and pieces. I hate cutting up a "Good/Nice" Mercury for it!!!

I need one. Maybe we all need to email Dennis carpenter and ask them to start making them again. They where the only one that made them

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

Has there been any updates as to the availability of the windshield gasket for the 39 / 40 Mercury's? (91A-7003110) Looks like the vendors are getting a little frustrated as well as far as getting them because customers are looking for them. Is Dennis Carpenter the only one making these, are they just that far behind, or what's going on there?

Karl Wescott 07-08-2024 11:59 AM

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

Carpenter is the only prime vendor I know of. Every other vendor (including myself) resells theirs. Carpenter still shows the part number as active, which imho indicates intent to make them again, however no indication as to when that might be.

Unless I'm missing something, this company has them.

I believe Steele Rubber products makes them but I talked to them at a show recently and they said it would be awhile til they did a run.

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

I called and checked with the Rubber the Right Way company and they didn't have them. I believe the guy said he gets them from Carpenter.

Re: Would you buy a Mercury windshield seal?

I've tried emailing dennis carpenter about this and the never responded. I was told that the 41 ford/ merc seal with stainless trim can be made to work. Has anyone done this? Thanks
