Dash light The instrument light on the dash of my 29 Tudor has never functioned since I purchased the car. Never bothered me before but now I would really like it to work. My silly issues is, I do not know how to turn it on. Anyone??
|
Re: Dash light Push and turn clockwise about 1/8 of a turn. Just pushing will turn it on. It will turn off when released unless turned clockwise. Turn counter-clockwise to turn it back off. It takes a #63 6-volt bulb if you are still running 6 volts.

Re: Dash light Thank you so much.I just installed a new wiring harness and have new ambition to make everything work. Thanks
|
Re: Dash light If you put an LED bulb in it you will have more light, less current draw and it WON'T burn your fingers.
|
Re: Dash light If you have a modern ignition switch you can wire the light to turn on only with the ignition on. So if forget to turn the light off it will not drain your battery.

Re: Dash light I had a aviation grade light bulb in there. It was the replacement for the #63. It had a heavy duty filament, but it finally burned out. I got it at NAPA. Wish I still had that part number, because the light I have now is not as much candlepower.
|
Re: Dash light Does the bulb not have a number on it? Possibly a #81, 6 CP compared to a #63, 3 CP.
|
Re: Dash light i have the stock dash light but can not find a bulb. the socket takes a single contact w/offset pins bulb.
|
Re: Dash light Vet #94 - is this not it? https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...d=976629&cat=0
|
Re: Dash light i can't see if that has offset pins.
|
Re: Dash light i sent a message to snyders to verify if it has offset pins.
|
Re: Dash light Good idea. The description should tell you. Some do, some don't....

Re: Dash light It is a pain in the posterior. To turn it on, simply push it in as you would a cigarette lighter in a modern car. Pull it out slightly and it should go off. The problem is that the fixture gets worn and comes on every time you hit a bump in the road...or temperature causes metal expansion to have it come on while parked...killing the battery. Mine does NOT have offset pins...they are two pins at equal distance from the bottom.
|
Re: Dash light German Guy, The LED does not get hot like the incandescent bulb and will not drain your battery (as fast) if you forget and leave it on. Sorry, I don't have a part number but do a search for the equivalent LED. See post #5.
|
Re: Dash light I leave it in the 'on'-position all the time, it being lit is my reminder that i have not turned off the main switch when parked... As i have an LED (yellow), leaving it on does not heat things up too much.

I would use the stock bulb and file off one pin, as others have suggested. |
Re: Dash light Replacing the original bulb with a much brighter LED sounds like an excellent idea to me I need to change my mind to that!!!
|
Re: Dash light I have never seen a single fiiment bulb with offset pins. I see no use to do that. I am using a LED in my Town Sedan, burned my fingers one to many times using an regular bulb!

Re: Dash light I can't get the cover back on good ....
Is there knack to putting it on .? Mine wants to drop off.... It's a '29.. |

Re: Dash light my dashlight is tore apart does anybody know where i can get picture to put it back together.
|
Re: Dash light The early type base wasn't really made to be taken apart since a little metal bent tab has to be straitened to disassemble. If the tab breaks off then the housing is done. The outer cover was made to be removable for bulb replacement.
Find an old GE miniature bulb catalog and you can get all the numbers for replacements of same design bulbs. Edison Mazda/GE designed all the most common bulbs and continued to manufacture them for years. Each design bulb has a reference code so a person can tell whether it fits or not. They came in various voltages and candle powers |

Re: Dash light I think I'd try finding a way to eliminate the tab first. If it can be disassembled then it would be easier to maintain it.
|
Re: Dash light on another note within this thread, I need to replace my entire lamp assembly. The normal suppliers state Out of Stock, any source for a replacement?
|
Re: Dash light Recently, I was lucky enough to find a repairable used one on flea-pay. I used a reproduction socket pigtail for a 28/29 headlamp to replace the damaged pig tail. The new reproductions have been out of stock for a long time with no guarantee of further replacements.

Re: Dash light Several comments about using an LED Bulb for the Dash Light BUT no one has offered the type or number ! Can someone help ?
I also like attaching it to the ignition switch! |
Re: Dash light Quote:
If I get out to the car today I will check. I don't know if it will help you tho. My car is 12v. If it helps at all, the dash light takes the same bulb as the cowl and dome lights. |
Re: Dash light Cape Codder, I believe this is the LED I used in my dash light. https://www.superbrightleds.com/led-...volts-12V~ACDC
I see it comes in 6v but only available in the 32° version. I think it should work fine, they are pretty bright. I have the 12v, warm white, 90° version in my '30 Town Sedan. |
Re: Dash light Y-Blockhead - Thanks for the Info for the LED Bulb! Has to be better than what ORIGINAL gives me.
|
Re: Dash light I put an amber LED in my coupe, it was perfect, Plenty of light without being too bright and had kind of a natural color. It was a bulb from my cowl lights.
It did burn out and I haven't replaced it though. 6V car. |
Re: Dash light |
Re: Dash light If I wasn't a "purist", I'd add a separate switch for the dash light. Maybe just a small toggle on the bottom of the dash. Has anyone done that before? Seems to be a great fix to alleviate any hot covers and avoids the reliance on the spring to pop in and out.

Re: Dash light I really like nkaminar's idea a LOT ! That's not to say I would E V E R forget to turn it OFF !
