Miller-style cylinder head 4 Attachment(s)
Back in December I asked about a cylinder head that turned out to be a Miller head, and not a Winfield as was believed. Since then I went to where this head was and took some info from it and modeled it up with a combustion chamber that resembles a Winfield crow foot chamber. I test cut a sample chamber in a block of wood and calculations result in a 6.25:1 chamber.
I then CNC cut a pattern, and modeled the deck cover core and water jacket. The deck core and water jacket will be made from 3D printed sand for the first batch of orders, which looks to be some aluminum and some iron versions. The pattern does not have any nomenclature on it yet, as I do not know what lettering will be put on it. I believe pricing for these will be $375-400, maybe $425. Sample pictures of the almost complete models and pattern are attached. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head 1 Attachment(s)
Here is what the water jacket and deck core look like assembled. The models are in the hands of the people that will 3D print them for prototype castings.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Which style/size of spark plugs are you planning for your design?
|
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
The originals used pipe plug spark plugs, so that is the plan at first. 14mm will probably also be available. Good question. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head 1 Attachment(s)
The first sample cores assembled and ready for the foundry.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Very nice work! Looking good

Re: Miller-style cylinder head 1 Attachment(s)
I assembled 2 molds today to cast 2 iron prototypes of this new head.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head 2 Attachment(s)
First 2 iron Miller style heads shot blasted and ready to machine for testing.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Interesting project! Any progress since your last post?

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
I made 2 castings. One is in a machining fixture ready to machine but I am crazy busy right now so machining is not under way yet. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Okay. Do let us know when you are able to make further progress. Any thoughts on top “decoration” (script, name, etc.)?

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
I'm not sure what I will do for script. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head For script I visualized TOD written in a FORD like script, with the letters the same and the T with the Ford F flourish. It is a neat project and would be fun to own.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head 2 Attachment(s)
Took some time to start machining on one of the first samples.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head 1 Attachment(s)
Finally took some time to finish the top machining.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Fascinating project! Thank you..

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Good news on the new cylinder head. Today the first sample was test run and things went well. It was run using a used gasket, so the next test is with a new gasket and then it will be dyno tested.

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Hi Tod,
Is there a reason why the radius of the valve pocket area doesn't match the radius of the gasket? |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
Taking the chamber out to that gasket would reduce compression ratio. The aim is to get 6.25:1. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head It would appear I am in need of someone to test one of these heads and dyno it if possible.
Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head I like Miller for the name!!

Re: Miller-style cylinder head Tod,
Also, what is the availability for the Miller heads? |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
These heads will be iron, at first. I have not planned on selling gaskets with them. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
I will be making a few more prototypes soon, for additional testing and dyno, and then into production. Tod |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
I would be interested in purchasing one if you’ve got one for a 1929 Model A. Right now I’m running a milled stock head with a custom intake. I already purchased a cast aluminum Equalizer so this new head should increase the HP a bit. Do you think you’ll have something available before TROG (in Wildwood) this year? Pete |
Re: Miller-style cylinder head Quote:
Pete, These are for Model T only. I have other heads for Model A's but I am having trouble getting castings due to my core shop working almost 24 hours a day and my foundries are 8 months backlogged. Tod |
