Hood hinges - tube or rod?

My local vendor stocks a set of stainless tubes for the hood hinges. For the same price I could buy solid stainless rod. Which is better?

An old trick back in the day was to stick a brazing rod in there. If would go with something solid for sure.

My late 31 Tudor has steel tubes, I've heard that wooden dowel could be used!

Here are some original hood rods. The top rod behind the radiator cap is a seamed 3/8" OD steel tube. The side rods are a solid 1/4" steel. The upper rod is difficult to remove without damaging. All these you see are beyond repair. Bent into a corkscrew or bent/crimped over at the ends. Whether you go with a solid or tubular upper rod, if something heavy comes down on your hood, it won't matter which you use.
A straight piece of 5/16" ID (3/8"OD) brake line is a pretty close fit for a top rod. But in the long run, a stainless rod won't ever rust.

Think I'll go for rods, thanks for the input. Got wood dowel holding it together right now!

Where do you find a brazing rod that thick? ⅜" for the center rod I believe? Thanks.

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?

I got them at a welding supply shop. That is very big to braze with.

There are 3 places in a Model-A where this rolled tubing is used. Wanna take a guess where the other two places are>>

Tubes are stronger Learned this working on hydraulic rods and tubes ,more surface area to bend makes it stronger with less weight.

Seamed gas lines and 28-29 radiator tubes. That makes about 5 seamed tubing applications.

Not sure if this counts As one but the rear radius rods Are seamed

Lubricate your old rods in the hood. Then punch them out a bit. Connect a drill motor to them to spin them as you pull them out. Makes the process a lot easier.

Thirty or 40 years ago my dearly departed uncle wisened me to that procedure. I must have passed it on to 100 people by now.

Solid rods are much easier to punch out enough to get a hold of when trying to remove .

Yes, very true however one trick to make it a tad easier is to thread a tap into the end creating an internal plug. Then use a long rod inserted thru the opposite end and rattle the rod out with an air hammer or rivet gun.

I was told the only other places that used that 3/8 OD seamed tubing was the light switch rod and the choke sleeve.

Thanks Brent! Will file that one away for later date with an upper hood rod.
