What do you carry with you?

Hello all! I thought I would ask all of you what extras you carry with you (if you do) when driving. I’m thinking of a small duffel bag to keep with me with some tools and extra ignition parts, belt, a fire extinguisher, flashlight, magnet, and a tire pump.
So what’s in your bag?

AAA card. I actually carry far more than any three cars need. I'm thinking of really scaling back. I have a small canvass Craftsman tool bag, hydraulic bottle jack, flares, fan, belt, Marvel Mystery oil, crank. I have 4 military surplus ammo cans with various stuff like spare dizzy, spare carb, light bulbs. Too much crap really.

AAA card, Don’t ruin your trip carrying an extra car in parts. Some people even carry a glossary of parts. If the car is in that bad a shape stay home. Carry a spare tire, fan belt and set of points and the AAA card. You just opened a major can of worms. .

When I drove my restored 29 as a daily driver years ago, I just had the bag of original Ford tools, jack and an extra condenser. I had the grease gun loaded with water pump grease and a little tin of Vaseline for the distributor cam and windshield wiper motor. That was all I needed.

I carry a small canvass bag with common hand tools in it under the front seat. In the bag is also a trouble light for checking voltage points, a distributor by-pass cable, a feeler gauge, and a distributor cam wrench. Under the back seat is a spare fan belt, a spare Zenith carburetor and a spare distributor that is timed for my engine. I also carry a spare lower distributor shaft. The shaft is not for me, but for other people. A number of times I have had to use my spare distributor on other people's car during a tour and several times found the one removed had the long shaft on it. I also carry a suitable jack and a lug wrench.

I do about the same as Tom. But I do have my AAA card and cell phone. Also throw in a tow cable. A lot of the road around here are two lane narrow and it is good the have the cable to be able to have someone pull you to a good parking spot.

I carry tons too much, too much to list here. Am a firm believer if something breaks, it will be something you do not have. So if I carry enough maybe I will not break down.

I do mostly solo driving, am paranoid about getting stuck somewhere. Do not have a significant other to fetch me.

Just the way I am.

WATER. For the radiator or me, whoever is thirsty at the time. A quart of oil, can of PB Blaster, can of ether,( not in the passenger compartment) basic hand tools, wrenches screwdrivers test light ECT, a couple jumper wires, wire nuts, flash lights, a tail and head light bulb, hand crank, bottle jack, blocks for said jack, lug wrench, points/condenser, a couple clean spark plugs, hose clamps, fan belt, carb kit, a pry bar suitable for rotating the engine backwards when the starter binds up, tow strap, a junk blanket to lay on or warmth, a set of channel locks that fit the water pump, a camping shovel, and a roll of paper towels.

And above all else in importance, GOOD pliars and bailing wire.

First aid kit ain't a bad idea either.

Why not just a AAA card and a cell phone. It must be terrible contemplating a breakdown every time you start the A. Can’t imagine your trips are much fun ! O

Maybe because I often find myself in non metropolitan areas, where AAA response time can be up to 6 hours,

Maybe because I don't pay for AAA,

Maybe because I'm almost guaranteed no cell service in many areas I go,

Or maybe, just maybe, because I enjoy a degree of self reliance, faith in my OWN skills and abilities, and take pride in handling bad situations on my own. Maybe that's it.

And contrary to what you may believe, I have more fun with my rattly rusty driver quality A than any restored show queen I've owned.

*Add to my last post, a handful of assorted fasteners in the bottom of the tool bag can be a life saver.

I really think the canvas tool roll is the berries. Bucket boss has the expensive ones, but there are good ones for less than $10. Unroll it and you have all your tools.

Re: What do you carry with you?

When we are on a long trip, we are usually outside phone range so I have to expect that if the car stops, I am the one who will have to get it going. I carry a set of tools (spanners, screw drivers, pliers etc,, jack and handle. There is a distributor and carburettor (never have needed either), some electrical wire, fan belt and test light. A spare tube (from when we couldn't get a decent one) is always there and a stick of Kneedit (an epoxy putty).
Because a repair might take a while, we have a toilet roll, food and water. We have had to make some what I think are clever improvisations but we've always gotten home. IMO, the best thing to take is the gap between your ears filled with knowledge about your car.

IMO, there is no reason to have to "contemplate a breakdown every time you start" a well maintained Model A. I go over my model A after a outing and check it again before the next.

Yes things can happen, but they can happen on a modern also. I'm certainly not going to let it spoil my fun.

That said, I do carry a small tool box, Halotron fire extinguisher and a first aid kit 'just in case'.

Yes. Not a complete carb but parts of the kit. After apparently getting bad gas, and having the carb apart 3 times coming home.

The belt, was after replacing the fan belt as part of "good maintenance". Did it while I had the radiator off, why not, I was there. Threw the take off under the seat. The new one separated about 30 miles from home, ( about a month old, maybe a hundred miles on it.) Put the take off back on and drove home.

Re: What do you carry with you?

I should have a tire pump and fan belt, but i can't find a tire pump anywhere. And anyone under 50 seems to be "What's a V belt?".

I do tend to carry a tiny bottle of oil. Swiss army knife, screwdriver or 2. adjustable spanner. And lately i've been reminded of the value of a packet of chewing gum. Can patch all sorts of leaks with that.
Also, a candle and piece of soap. Amazing what you can lube or patch with those. A stick that you can carve threads into with a pocket knife is handy if you lose a sump plug too.

This is not to be underestimated. If more people did this (regardless of what brand car they drive), there'd be a lot less break downs in the first place.

Re: What do you carry with you?

Bob made a nice post, but I'm curious, I see masking tape in the bag but not on the list? Also, where's the head gasket? I didn't see it on the list or in the picture?

Something I try to do, is carry proven ignition parts. As in not buying new ones for the road kit. I'll do a tune up when the car is running fine, polish the points, and carry those. Nothing more aggravating than defective new parts. Except digging through all the junk I carry trying to find said parts.

Anybody carry road flares? Or reflectors?
