Zero at the Diner Took AnnaRae in Old Henry an hour away up the mountain (6,434 ft) to the Road Island Diner in Oakley for dinner. It is a very historic diner having begun its life in 1939 in Fall River, MA where Al McDermott ran it for 14 years before he sold it and it was moved to Middletown, RI where it operated as Tommy's Deluxe Diner until 2007 when it was moved to the little mountain hamlet of Oakley, UT (pop 1,544) and restored to its former, and now current, glory. Before I could get my picture of it the engine heat bumped it to 1°. 63° was inside of Old Henry. Re: Zero at the Diner ...I suspect most of the old diners, (and Mom & Pop places), have been run out of business by the fast food joints. The new generations want speed & a drive thru window. If there are diners in our areas, we need to support them every chance we get and keep them open.

Re: Zero at the Diner We have 2 left on the Berlin Turnpike here in Connecticut. All the rest have been altered so much, you can't recognize them or they've been torn down. One is here in Newington, where I live and the other is in Wethersfield, next town up the pike. These are only a few of what's left in Connecticut.

Re: Zero at the Diner When I was in Danbury, CT, pre '67, there were 3 "shiney" diners. Mill Plain,west of town. Popular with truckers, because of parking. Durkin's, just east of downtown. Don't recall the name of the third, near the train station. They were on US Rt. 6/7, that went right thru town.

A photo from my now defunct HO model railroad, set in the 1956 time frame. Right across the street from the station in Percy, GA, and walking distance from the bus station.
The model was a narrow shelf layout, so space was tight. Note the 1936 cab at the station. |
Re: Zero at the Diner We have two "old style" diners in York Cty., ME. Blast from the Past in Waterboro and Rock n' Roll Diner in Scarborough. I believe they're owned by the same people..... Mark

Re: Zero at the Diner I grew up (allegedly) in New Jersey, where dinner eating is king. Jersey dinners are disappearing as well and many look like stand alone restaurants. Miss the dinners, fortunately live in Minnesota and can go to Mickey's when I need a fix. Only problem is they don't have a pork roll and egg on a hard roll.
