latest ebay fee increase

The latest is a 2% charge for a reserve price.

Reserves? Never quite understood a reserve. If the item is TRULY for sale, set the starting bid at what a guy must have (minimum) and allow the auction to do what it does.
Reserves are for guys trying to get a free estimate of value...the market will dictate the true value.
I say make it 10% and sort out those that don't really want to sell or have an overly inflated idea of what their item is worth.

EBAY is quickly losing market share with their onerous and outrageous fees. On the last items I sold between the EBAY fees, PayPal fees, etc. it ended up being close to 15 % that they deducted. They even get a cut of the shipping costs even though they don't ship the item. It is their way of making up for losses from large volume sellers. I will never deal with ERAPE again. On another related note, shipping fees are continuing to increase. UPS,FedEX and even the USPS are charging much higher fees than last year making shipping something to factor in when purchasing. They say it is a fuel surcharge when fuel prices have been on the decline in most of the country. I was going to ship a vehicle with Reliable or Passport. It was a short trip, less than 200 miles. They wanted 1200 bucks plus a 200 dollar fuel surcharge. Never again.

While I agree 100% that eBay fees are quite high there are (at least) two sides of the story.
Something many may not consider is the fact that because of eBay, MANY parts unlikely to otherwise be found have become available.
I am a fairly regular seller on eBay and yes, the fees do take a chunk out of my pocket. I especially have an issue with the fees associated with postage. I can understand Paypal charging for this as they are processing the transaction. EBay is however, doing nothing in regard to the postage fees. I did check in to the legality of this and unfortunately, they can charge for this.
Still, typically the prices I realize are far above what I would get at a local swap.
I wonder how many guys charge goods and services on a daily basis and never once consider the fees the retailer must pay.

roadster36, I agree with you that the vehicle shipping charges are most of the time overpriced and the vehicles are not properly taken care of. I recently had a vehicle shipped from New York to Alaska. cost was $4395, the vehicle was supposed to be in an enclosed trailer to the west coast and then a container to Alaska. I have pictures of it being loaded into an enclosed trailer in New York, but the car was filthy and had oil and grease on it from a vehicle carried above it. who knows how it was really shipped. I found that most, almost 95% of vehicle shipping goes through brokers, so you never really know who you get, so when shipping do your homework, and then do some more because it may not be enough.

If you think ebay fees are high, take your vintage bits to an antique consignment shop, the fees can be around 35%.

I have with only one exception used Passport Transportation for the past 30+ years. That one exception? Shipped three cars to Dearborn from Wisconsin and back with Blue Highways. NEVER again. Horror story from day one. Unprofessional, faulty equipment (elevator didn't work), driver arrived very late...
Passport is perhaps a bit pricier than others but the cars are always taken the best care of and arrive on time, every time.

Anyone been ripped off by the new return policy ebay uses? A buyer demands a refund and doesn't return the items but gets a full refund. I had it happen. The buyer makes a complaint .I accepted a return. He didnt return the parts but ebay automatically refunded all his money back and kept all the parts. Just wonder if anyone else here has had it happen. The guy that did it to me I found out pulled the same stunt with another seller. Easy way for people to steal your stuff and ebay protects them with the money back guarantee.

Happened to my brother. Yep, this is a totally wrong method of operation on eBay's part.

Not to defend eBay, but they are a publicly traded company, so they are all about revenue. It ain't no mom and pop operation. I buy and sell on there often. I did have a dispute with a buyer who have me an unnecessary bad rating.

I have been ripped off on FB and had no recourse. Life just ain't smooth. I might rather sell on eBay than through FB.

As for the refund policy, that mystifies me. I sold an item and the buyer asked for a refund. When I got the item back, I authorized the refund. Maybe the money back guarantee is different. If the stories told are true eBay will likely change it, as people will quit selling on the site.

"Anyone been ripped off by the new return policy ebay uses?"

I sold a part to a fellow Ford Barn member a couple of weeks ago. He told me the same story about Ebay refunding money, 2-days after the part shipped. He got delivery confirmation a few days after that, but the Buyer wouldn't answer his emails and Ebay ignored him, too. Great way to run a business !!

No more Ebay selling for me.

My defense of ebay is I buy a lot of parts there that I do not know another source for. You can almost always find anything you are looking for. There is just not a perfect system I guess. I use ebay a lot and have had fairly good luck with it.

Hey I dig ebay. Buying is great.

Sold a few things lately and wasn't pleased. I guess if you want to spend time looped through computer phone systems and Internet loops then it's great.

Told me it was free listings then hit me for 15 percent listing. Didn't come up till a month later and wanted to link straight to PayPal for auto payments... Ya no thanks. Being that of that they own PayPal so they get all those charges too.

I guess if you need to sell something add 40 percent to total and enjoy. It is still a great resource. A world wide junk yard.

I buy all the time on Ebay. I stopped selling there because of the postage BS. I know PayPal is spinning off, but I'll bet Ebay will have a finger in the pie somehow. Ebay took a good thing for us and ruined it when they got greedy. I know they have their overhead, etc..., but you and I have to make the CEO and the stockholders rich. That's the American way now, rape the public.
off my soapbox.

well i have been on ebay for a long time but pretty much stopped selling because they are not fair and there is no recourse when they are wrong which they often are. they don't care about fair, all they care about is getting as much in fees out of us that they can.

I've been into old cars since about 1966. Back then the main parts source was swap meets, the odd dealer find, maybe a buddy found a part, Hemings motor news where all the sellers thought their stuff was gold. Just couldn't find much for the old flatheads. No problems with crown Victoria's but they started to disappear in the early 1970s. I've used eBay since the late 90s and have found a lot of real finds but those are trying to dry up. I'm very happy to use eBay because I can still find things I need.

Re: latest ebay fee increase

IMHO, Ebay is a good thing for people like me that happen to live out of the "main stream". Old car parts are hard to find here in Alaska. What hasn't rotted into the ground or has been scrapped due to the enviromentalist movement that has been snowballing the last 20 years here is hoarded by all of us car enthusist up here. There is no real swap meets, and what few there are suck. I guess if you are looking for newer c#$*y or four wheel drive parts they are ok. The only other option is a expensive plane ticket, car rental,& hotel stay at a swap meet down south. Then the airlines rips you off with baggage fees, not to mention the TSA riffling thru your expensive antique parts and just throwing everything back in your luggage with no reguard to how carefully you had packed everything. UPS & FEDX have a license to steal shipping to Alaska. Their freight charges are ridiculous. I don't like paypal. I would rather send a postal money order to the seller by certified mail. My rant is over now. Bill

Craig's list is free and Amizon will also sell items for you at 10%. Postage prices have become expensive and eBay has lost sellers because of these fee increases.
eBay is now testing the waters with a new startup here in California called Close5. It was first tested in limited market areas but will roll out nation wide if it is successful. It works like a garage sale by letting you post pictures on their app and getting others in your area to buy the items without having to ship them. It only works locally and eBay gets a fee for getting the seller and buyer together. I like eBay for buying things if the seller offers free shipping, but I myself stopped selling items because of those high fees! If enough people stop using eBay for selling then they may get the point.

Yep, was watching one of those collector car auctions on TV and it was said that the talk between the bidders as they were bidding obscenely high prices for cars was the 2% increase they have to pay on Ebay.
Good grief!

Re: latest ebay fee increase

interesting to hear everyone's opinions on ebay
I completely agree on the selling aspect, I no longer do-they priced themselves off the chart and didnt take care of their sellers, only the buyers.
SO yes, now I am only a buyer and for the most part find it a great forum to purchase from. I can "see" so much more then driving from from flea to flea. Of course the fun of going to swaps is gone, but when you need parts, admittedly the internet is the way to go today.
The only "real" competition ebay has is with Craigslist, and they own a portion of that as well. I do find CL often brings the bottom feeders, but there is a place for everything....
Would be nice for ebay to take notice of what their sellers have to say, and adjust
to the many sellers they've lost, but that would be too easy. They will probably just run the business in the ground like Comcast and a few other behemoths................

Re: latest ebay fee increase

I buy and sell on Epay all the time. I have had my share of ups and downs with buyers and the stupid, expensive fees charged. I am not a hoarder or speculator. I sell only parts in order to buy other parts I need. Rather sell on the Barn or the Hamb and sometimes C/L. Epay is the last resort for me, but be cautious. Buyers are protected and have you by the short hairs so you have to have confirmed delivery. If relatively expensive I send insured requiring signature. Have gone so far as taken pictures and made unique identifying marks on things sold to protect myself. Basically we all can agree the fees are outrageous and a last resort point of sale. Rather be a buyer than seller there.

I agree with you all about the fees. I am also aware that it is sad that we are not selling on ebay any more because many of us have those hard to find parts that are not available any more because we are not selling. Another sad story. I see that Apple is trying to start an application that allows you to sell stuff using your smart phone.. Maybe they will give ebay some competition without robbing us sellers.

I have pretty fair luck by selling parts on Fordbarn and the AACA site. The only thing is, that you have to know your price and hope you didn't underprice your item.
They are BOTH free !

Ripped off for sure. Sold a NOS voltage regulator, buyer claimed it had been mounted before and not NOS. It was returned scratched up and marks of being mounted. It appears the buyer got a NOS part for free. I was left out the shipping charges for its return and a used and abused part on the shelf that I likely can not sell. Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Rod

Haven't sold on Ebay for several years, ever since they required that payment be made with Paypal and all the fees that nickel and dime you to death. Too many other good sites for selling stuff. I do still buy on Ebay as I don't have to pay any fees to do that.

I suspect he is a member of Fordbarn, but do not know for sure as I do not remember the name or user name without looking at my invoices. It was for a later flathead. Wish I had a good way to test it to see if it worked or not. Maybe I could atleast break even on the return shipping fees after it sold.

The purpose of me posting this is because it seems there is alot of this going on. Along with many buyers buy then don't pay. I have had 11 of those in the last year. Re: latest ebay fee increase

One thing I have to say on behalf of PayPal is I got my money refunded because I used PayPal making a purchase. A website was advertising a very low price on motorcycle parts.
I ordered from them because they excepted PayPal. This was not affiliated with eBay just a internet company selling motorcycle parts. Several weeks passed and I started to worry about why they were not responding to my emails, but had $400 dollars of my money. I finally put a claim into PayPal and was told they would look into the matter. A short time later PayPal said this website was closed but someone forgot to take it down off the internet. They said we apologize for the mixup and my money was refunded asap!
Not sure if I would have gotten my money refunded without PayPal involved. Was a happy ending!!!

Re: latest ebay fee increase

RE; Ebay Well ok, some don't sell because of fees or what ever but you buy! I guess if everyone selling parts took that route there would be nothing to buy. :)
Yes I sell on ebay mostly because when I need to pay bills I need the money ASAP, not after X amount of emails and waiting for a check or cash then for a couple of day for the check to clear. Yes I too cringe at the fees but boom the money is in my Pay-Pal account and bills are payed.
While yes I/you can accept Pay-Pal, but if it starts showing too many transfers among friends :) on my account, things may click on their end. :( Otherwise as a seller, to be safe, you will still be paying merchant fees.

Might be a bit off topic but it bothers me that I have to pay $20 to bring my car to a show and Spectators get in for free, I feel it's backwards. We spend all the time, effort and money to restore our cars then have to pay to show them to others who see them for free.

I wondered ed the same thing as the guy that scammed me was for flathead ford parts. The guy that got me also sells stuff. Since you can't leave buyers negative feedback and the so called report a buyer does nothing the sellers have little recourse. After finding out he scammed another person I just hate to see more people fall prey to this easy way of ripping off other people.

Best place I found for sellng is Hershey. but its more of a vacation then anything. Buying for my own projects and what I sell just helps pay for what I bought. Greed ruins everything

In the old days this sort of thing was called theft and fraud. The scum bags are probably selling your parts and laughing it up. The paper had an article just today about people doing more and more of these things paying for gambling addictions or meth that sort of thing:mad: that is getting out of control. One story was about Craigslist, where a 'buyer' went to the seller's house, clobbered him over the head, and stole him blind. Low life was caught but it's a dangerous world out there today.

rhphotord 06-07-2015 09:17 AM

Re: latest ebay fee increase

I have sold many things on Craigslist as well. You have to take serious precautions to protect yourself and in many cases the buyer will agree. There are all sorts of scammers out there and many are criminal types. Common sense tells me to only meet the buyer in well used public places for the exchange and never meet at your home if possible. I generally take a friend with me as witness or if the deal involves big money I take personal protection. Sad but that's the world we live in.

I have been using Ebay almost as long as it has existed. Mostly for buying parts, but occasionally I have sold on it. In the early days, you could send a check or money order, then they forced the use of PayPal and its been steadily down hill. But, my biggest complaint is the clutter of stuff you get when you do a search. For example, if I search on something very specific, like "1940 Ford Grill", I'll probably get many pages of hits, but most will be for generic items like nuts and bolts. Who want to wade through all that junk and what does it have to do with my search? I wish there were a good alternative to Ebay.

I have built my own personal junkyard off eBay - it is way too easy to buy with PayPal and the high percentage of sellers with free shipping. Love swap meets but it's much easier to find old parts on eBay, CL, FB, HAMB, etc.
I really don't like the hassle of going to the post office to buy a money order - PayPal is so much easier.

eBay has gotten pretty frustrating the last few years by cluttering up the search results making it more time consuming. Never sold anything but sounds like it's not worth the time, trouble, and risk.
