Re: there goes nice model A gone... Although I do like the looks of chopped model A's I still couldn't watch them do it. And they didn't even use any other part of the car! Why buy a nicely done complete model A if your going to throw everything away anyway? Why not just buy a shell that's already been hacked up? I don't know. I just wish I could of got all the leftover stuff they didn't use.
|
Re: there goes nice model A gone... Do not mistake them for logical people. They work for TV that automatically means they will find the most expensive way to do something, normally offending people in the process, same reason i don't watch those fast & spurious movies.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... I think what they paid for the car. Is about what a car like that schould go for. It was nice but still needed a lot of work. 6500 for the car and it needed painted. And to have a good paint job these days will run you quite a bit. And no telling what other stuff needed to be done. The guy started off asking 9,500 for it. A few years ago I think he might could have gotton it. But not now. At least not any where around here.

Here in Fresno, there are MANY, real high dollar street/hot rods & most guys will pay premium prices for a GOOD, SOLID body! They don't want to start with a butchered or rusty body. Good rolling chassis & such, are often available to stock Model A guys. I have Hot Rod friends that envy me for having a very decent, original/restored '29 Coupe, that will zip around with city traffic, & tour around in our BEAUTIFUL Sierra Nevada Mountains, even though it's 83 years old. I have a friend in Fish Camp, Ca, that rents Model A's & Model T's to tour Yosemite National Park & surrounding areas & teaches how to drive them SAFELY! If you reserve a car ahead of time, he'll send you an instructional VIDEO/VHS tape on how to drive them! They look at details of MY car & say things like, "OH! that's what mine looked like, before it was altered"! Really tacky old body stuff is usually used to build them old RAT RODS, they're kinda like, "ANTHING FOR A LAFF"! I STILL have that old Hot Rod crap in my SOUL, it's harder to get rid of than DRUGS! Re: there goes nice model A gone... Had a good laugh a couple of years ago when they purchased a Rolls Royce and modified it by lowering, custom wheels and a lot of other mods then could not sell it for what they had into it. I personally do not like seeing really nice cars being trashed. Have a lot of friends with hot rods and know several people that are in the customizing business, and can appreciate the work they do.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... I don't like any reality shows especially the ones were they work on cars so much fake.:D

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Phantom Works is a little easier to watch. They don't go into the $$ side that much, they just showcase the work on the cars and keep the money private.
They rebuilt a really shoddy 1917 Overland on Sunday night's show, was neat to see how it was brought back to life. A '68 Camaro that they bought on-line, the seller claimed 'it just has some surface rust' and it was a complete rotted out turd. A '79 Fiat (?) some guy bought on line, and looked OK until they started doing some repair work, another you-got-took story for the buyer. Car was actually unsafe. I see more car shows on the way, 'Garage Squad' and 'Bitchin' Rides'. The most aggravating thing I see in these shows, is how they are 'showing' the public how 'smart' they are by buying old cars on the cheap, doing some crappy basic work and (wait for it)........... FLIPPING the car for instant wealth. I've tried selling a couple of our cars in the last year, to make room for another and every instance has been some yo-yo trying to get the car for a third of it's worth so they can re-sell it and make some easy money. I gave up trying to sell anything it isn't worth the hassle. Thanks to the wave of reality TV car shows:mad: |
Re: there goes nice model A gone... Who really knows what goes on behind the scenes in any reality show, what they agree to buy a car for and what they agree to sell it for could be totally fabricated...I have first hand experience on how UN-real these reality shows are.
I had friends on Americas Got Talent this season, they made it into the live show rounds and were eliminated. How their performances were manipulated is amazing and they are under NDA's to not disclose anything to the public...it almost seems like it is fixed and they make it so the acts that they want to go through go through and the ones they don't are eliminated. I enjoy watching the car shows though for the entertainment value and a lot of times the beauty of what they create. I catch my wife watching marathon reruns of Counting Cars, she says that Danny creates rolling pieces of Art. |
Re: there goes nice model A gone... The topper to the Fast N Loud deal was when they couldn't get the doors to line up so they decided to cut and weld to fix it instead of using the shims that we use...I like hot rods, but my heart sank when I saw them cut up that coupe. All these TV shows use the same rationale; that it is cheaper to buy a nice car than it is to fix a rust bucket. May be true, but what about preserving antique cars as a high value, too?
|
Re: there goes nice model A gone... I also like hot rods but would never cut up a model A. I'm a do em like you want em kind of guy and don't let such things bother me.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... For you folks that criticize these shows, THERE'S THE OFF BUTTON!
Most of the times when I watch them, I "pick up" a good trick or two! Sorta' like watchin' COOKIN' shows! Bill W. |

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Earlier this year, we had a film crew from Brew Dogs (Esquire Channel) shooting a segment on our property. After watching the crew for two and a half days and then seeing the finished product, I will never beleive a damn thing I see on "reality TV" ever again.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... The only reality show that I enjoy. Is American Pickers. Mike on the show. Really has a real love for things that are old. Mostly motor cycles and traditional styled hot rods.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Reality shows are made for entertainment. Some are very entertaining.

Question, Would you allow those guys to replace the tires on your kids bike and allow you kid to ride it? I wouldn't let them near something that needed wrench work. TV crap at its best. Bob |
Re: there goes nice model A gone... I agree, and Chassing Classic Cars with Wayne Carinini is the top of the line for Automotive shows IMO. Bob

Re: there goes nice model A gone... :D Hey guys -
This reminds me of the other "SHOW of SHOWS" - American Pickers and the episode I wrote about that showed them pushing out a completely stock Steelback Vicky just to get to the shell of a body for a '32 Roadster. You can still find the link to the thread I posted here a bit ago. You guys are correct - it is a show and just that a t.v. show We fix'em and then drive'em - BEST DEAL going. Lets keep them on the road! Be well - SHEC  |
Re: there goes nice model A gone... It is rare to see these shops do a restoration up to original specifications throughout. Just saw a show that restored a 63 convertible corvette and they threw a 350 CSB in it (327 was original.) Then they did put 327 stickers on it. Seems criminal, although I did just install a leakless sealed bearing water pump and it has the original look complete with grease fittings that are only for looks. Guess I am a criminal.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... These cars are out there for that price. You have to find them before the guy that is going to flip it does. You don't see many good deals on Craig's list. The good deals come from word of mouth. If people know you are looking you will find good deals. That guy knew he was not going to get the 9,500 he was asking. And he drove down to get rid of it. If it was real? He knew that he was going to have to settle for less. I am about to make a deal on three model a's. They are projects. For hauling all the cars and parts. This guy has on a place he sold. I am getting three of them. It will probably take me two weekends. But the guy came to me. Because he knew I would do it. Deals are out there. Just have to be there to get them.
|
Re: there goes nice model A gone... Got mine for $5,400. Drove a couple hours to get it but I think it was a good deal. Only rust holes are on the rear wheel well bottoms.
|
Re: there goes nice model A gone... I watched just to see them do the chop, the "Master mechanic" dont know a DARN thing about chopping much less aligning a Model A!!!!
All the while richard is goin on and on about how many A's they have done. Most of the pics of cars they shoed were 32's LOL!! I realised why I stopped wathcing this show after the first couple.......... |
Re: there goes nice model A gone... I don't think I saw them brace the body before the chop. If they did not do that. That's why the doors did not fit.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Sad thing is. They can probably sell the sign easier. When you start messing with cars. You have to pay to ship them. And end up with more money tied up in them.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... I live close to Dallas and tried to contact Gas Monkey garage about the chassis and spare parts. All you can do is leave a msg and see if they will call you back.
|
Re: there goes nice model A gone... I really think the prices that fast and loud pay for cars is B.S. I think the rest of the money is given to the seller from the program sponsor.

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Just my $.02
Somebody found out recently that there a currently over 500,000 Model A's registered in the US. If this is true there has got to be at least 100,000 more just resting in storage, and probably at least 300-400 thousand in various states of completeness and parts. Figuring that probably 100-200 thousand are hot rodded, there has gotta be 20,000 for sale at any given time, and half are still stockers, or minorly upgraded. We all know that the advertised price for any car is just a fishing expedition. Having said that I can easilly find 5-10 cars a week within 200 miles from my home. Most reasonably good stock or nearly so Model As are asking for $10,000-$15,000. If you want one you can get it. I personally can't see cutting up a nice stocker, but if I found one with a V8 and some 35 wheels that somebody put together 40 or 50 years ago, I would just leave it alone and enjoy it. Ther are plenty of originals left. And the TV shows are purely entertainment. Sometimes you gotta get out and drive! Just my $.02 |

Re: there goes nice model A gone... Still a ton out there. The place I am cleaning up has 16 in various states. And tons of parts and motors. And he told me that his cusine has probably three times as many. Their family owned a antique car museum.
