"What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious http://www.petrolicious.com/what-is-...ur-vintage-car
I did beat a rice rocket Civic stoplight to stoplight once. They agreed to pull away in 4th. |
Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious If you're considering drag racing or tractor pulling, then I've abused a few. The only abuse I can think of with the old 'A' was one day when my father took it and tried to keep up with traffic on the NYS thruway for about 50 miles. He saw nothing wrong with what he did and pulled in with coolant sprayed all over everything and oil literally flowing out the hood side panels. It was apparently at the start of his Alzheimer's before we realized what was happening. That happened close to 20 years ago and the old girl is going strong, well, almost strong.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Pulled up beside a Lamborghini (Sp) at a stop light in my '29 Tudor, gunned the engine, and gave them the eye, but the two dudes in suites wouldn't even look my way. I assumed they knew they were going to get beat:D:D:D:D:D.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Driving my Double A like I do the F150, ---- Lightend flywheel ---- B carb and manifold ---- 5.5 head still don't get the job, I now need a twin updraft like Purdy has, that will get it.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Used my phaeton as a mobile gun platform to shoot rabbits on a country road. Brother perched on passenger seat top with shot gun resting on top of windsheild frame -Lights on and when we drove round a corner and saw the rabbits BANG !

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I tried to mount some 30's on my car.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I've been known to race other a's going down the road or at a stop light. I've done donuts in a speedster, by this next summer I'm going to have a trailer hitch on my coupe, so I can tow my speedster on a car dolley behind my coupe when I go to meets here in Texas. I like to drive both of them, so why not take both. I won't say the fastest I've ever been in a model a, but I can say it's probably close to double what the average "A" owner drives at. I'm not really afraid of doing much with my cars, if it breaks I can fix it. I've had a lot of fun in my cars, I don't see the point in having one if you're afraid to get a scratch or mess something up. To me, that's not enjoying the car to it's fullest potential.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I entered my 1928 Early Model A Roadster, with approximately 1 hour on the rebuilt engine in it's first car show. I also entered it in the "Slow Drags."
I took 2nd place in both. This was my first Model A, just got it assembled and legal to drive the day before. Knowing what I know now, surprised I didn't blow that engine to pieces. |

Race should be 3 legs. One today and one more each 20 years.. Wow - kind of unfair as my car has got 80 years advantage in streetracing ...or maybe he decides distance and i decide the route??? If i loose, i will buy a Fiat 126 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDdsjJrFS6c  |
Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious My best friend and I use to go orange grove cruising in his '26 T tudor. Just haul'n a$$ between the trees. He was a policeman and sometimes his cop buddies would get drunk (off duty of course) with us and we would head for the groves..........

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I am a electrician and one day I drove my Roadster to work, because the mornings where beautiful. my Forman came up to me and said I had to go to another job. so I loaded up the rumble seat with my tools and off I went. that was a fun work day, getting paid to drive my roadster!

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I let a Navy and an Air Force veteran ride in the '29 Coupe. Oh how I abused that sweet ride. lol

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious My '28 roadster pickup is a working truck so have hauled just about everything in it. The most unusual cargo was a windmill! It had a 10' fan and I separated the fan and tail from the gear head split the fan in 1/2 and stacked them all in the bed. There were pieces hanging out from all three side and over the top. I got it all home safe but ripped a hole in the top.

Nothing improper but maybe a little daring for elderly folks :)
We have owned many classic 190SL, 911s, Pagodas, E Types, etc during the past 40 odd years, but never a vintage car. We bought a lovely 29 A roadster pickup about a month ago which now lives in our hangar with our classics. We could not resist putting a camping mattres in the back and spent Christmas eve sleeping in our little A. The next day Santa used it to delivered gifts to kids at the airfield. Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I turned mine into a hot rod...

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Not my car, but a friend's. Perhaps we can include a car games event like this at the next national meet. I think passing the mud puddle test should be a requirement for the Henry Ford Award... Just to make sure engine, clutch, and rear axle were restored properly... Henry would approve.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious In the obverse, the finest hours for my 30 Cabby is the two parades in DC wherein I carried a US. Medal of Honor recipient each time. What a thrill for me!!! These guys are regular real people, but still to have one riding with me and chatting was such a fine time.

I just added a photo of me using my 1934 phaeton as a parts hauler.
The cars in the street and the parking lot, across the street, are the cars, you see now, at car shows. MIKE |
Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Back in the late 50's, my Dad use to sometimes "borrow" my 31 Fordor to deliver mail on his rural route. (No, it wasn't RHD)

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Model A's will go places some jeeps will have a tough time going. The tall narrow tires seem to help. I had a pair of Knobby Allstate tires on the back of the coupe in 77 when when we had a 10 inch snow. I had no problem driving in the snow.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I outran the tornado that happened in Oklahoma City/Moore, Oklahoma last spring when we were on our way back from the Museum opening. Then also outran two more tornadoes inbetween there & the Texas state line. Never been more scared/driven so far. Glad to say the old thing stayed together.

Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Here's the "improper" uses that my first Model A had: This was an AA 280A when it left the factory. The first 20 years of it's life it was used as it was designed -- An ambulance for a coal mine company in Northern New Mexico.
Then is was used variously as: A church bus A grocery truck (to supply a little grocery store 50 miles from nowhere) A farm truck Then I bought it. First I used it for a camping wagon Then it was my personal car when I got old enough to drive But the most unusual use of this truck was to sell Snow Cones in a small copper mining town in South East Arizona in the summertime. (kinda like the Good Humor trucks). |
Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious Henry designed the rear bumpers to pick up bicycles, so we should use them.
It's also perfect for camping... http://fstatic1.mtb-news.de/f/7t/7d/...IMG_0688.JPG?0 http://fstatic3.mtb-news.de/f/k8/d5/...IMG_0989.JPG?0 Speeding isn't improper, or is it? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/p...ctureid=357640 |
Re: "What is the most improper way you've used your vintage car?" -Petrolicious I had my 30 Tudor since I was a junior in high school. Used it drag the baseball field before a game at least once, it had a trailer hitch on it at the time. This would had been about 1966.:)
