"Old Henry" on the road again
 

Just two months and two days after his heart attack "Old Henry" hit the road again tonight after major open heart surgery (engine rebuild) by the most excellent and compassionate Doc Roger. Am I happy? I can't tell you how much. I've been anxious ever since he went into the coma wondering if he was ever going to wake up and live again. Gotta put some easy miles on him in the next week before we head to Glacier/Waterton National Peace Park in 10 days. :)

For the easy miles play Willie's "On The Road Again". Old Henry will like that. With the surgery complete he should be good for another 100,000 miles. It's good to hear you are both ready to roll.

Good news Professor! Pass along some stats when you get them: oil pressure, water temp, 0 - 60mph, etc. :)

Oil pressure is about 40 psi after cold start then down to about 25 psi after warmed up. That's with the S.A.E. 30 oil. I've left the thermostats out for summer so the temperatures aren't up to 160° yet driving around town under 40 mph. Haven't tested violent acceleration yet. Am still taking it easy on the new rings and lifters.

Now my biggest difficulty is keeping my butt on my chair at my home office and working when I hear Old Henry out in the garage whining to cruise. :(

The most logical explanation I think is some kind of flaw in the construction of the piston that caused it to fail. Nothing else really makes sense. I've never had that car over 70 mph and mostly cruise at between 55 and 65. I don't race the engine and I was only going 25 when the piston came apart. Changed the oil every 5,000 miles and added ZDDP to it. Added lead substitute to the gasoline and used Top Tier gas. So, looks like just a material flaw.

I wouldn't baby it during the brake in, rings need a load to brake in. I wish you well and meny miles of enjoyment, I like following your posts. I hope to have my mileage tests done sometime this summer for the stock engine.

Had to put on 100 miles yesterday to continue break-in for the big road trip. Drove around Utah Lake where I live. This is on the west side of the lake looking across to where I live just left of the dip between the mountains.

The hood? Couldn't wait to put the hood on to drive. Will put that on when I get the new Optima battery in the original Ford script case this week before the car show Saturday and the road trip next week.

A video of this start up would have been quite different but possibly even more entertaining. It would have been of me trying to start the engine with a dead battery. Charging the battery. Still no go. Trying to use a starter/charger. Still no go. Then pulling the Camry up next to Old Henry, hooking the jumper cables up to Old Henry's battery, then the Camry's. Then quick jump over the cables, dive into Old Henry, try to start, poor cable connection, no go, then repeat that whole comedy a few more times before it finally started. :o

Great news to my ears, Old Henry back on the road.. ready to rumble better than ever runnin with the big dogs, can't wait for the maiden voyage with the new motor and the script of the trip to follow, not to put pressure on you, but you've brought us to this point with your photo abilities and detailed story telling that keeps us on the edge of our seats at times, I'm sure all your traveling mates are excited, but Pepe I'm thinkin not so much, I believe he endures it just to appease you, lol. In any case enjoy!

I thought about leaving Pepe home but he would have to spend the week in my son's dark laundry room. I didn't think he'd like that any more than riding in the bouncy windy car, at least with people he loved, so, he's going with us. :)

On my trip around the lake Friday the ambient temperature was 90°. Engine temperature at 55 mph was 160-170°. I was pretty happy with that. It was previously otherwise. Boiling out the engine block and radiator probably didn't hurt any.

The other pleasant surprise was that my oil pressure was higher with the new oil pump. 40 psi starting cold and even stayed at 25 at fast idle. I liked that.
