I think Neil picked a winner. Bullitt. My favorite and probably started a trend in movie chases.

There were two car chases in that movie:

1. The cops chasing Jimmy Durante until he went off the cliff and then he told the witnesses where he buried the loot before "kicking the bucket"; and

2. the witnesses chasing each other to get to the spot (the big X) where the loot was buried.

I take it you haven't actually watched them then? Typical uneducated narrow, nationalistic mindedness?

I've never understood the appeal of overpowered cars with no traction and the roadholding of boiled pasta? They don't make good road cars or car chases. It must, yet again be to do with nationality. If you want a good Steve McQueen vehicle sequence then The Great Escape wins hands down.

Im going for the Peter Jackson remake of King Kong, final scene when kong chases the 4dr A sedan down the street & rips the roof off, This car belonged to me before the movie, I sat through the movie just to watch the last scene & by the way no vehicles where hurt in the making of it , how they faked it I don,t know ,mind you in the movie all vehicles where LHD , but in real life most where RHD , lots of local Model A,s where used.

Absolutely . . . The best car chase was in "MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD" After-all, the entire movie plot was based on a car chase with a bunch of money crazed average slobs trying to get to "The Big W" to dig up the cash. Saw that flick back in 1962 (?) when it was shown in ultra super wide-screen CINERAMA. At the movie beginning when Jimmy Durante drives the 1957/1959 Ford (different film versions) over the cliff, seeing that scene in the CINERAMA theater causes the viewer's stomach to flip over at least a couple of times. That movie was made for CINERAMA theaters.

Bullitt hands down.

Next would be the ORIGINAL Gone in 60 Seconds that show beats the re-make ten times over. Fun to watch,,,, the street scenes are great especially if you love 60's and early 70's cars.!

And Popeye Doyle in French Connection, a good one also!!!

Snowing out.... think I'll pop in my copy of the Tony Halicki 'Gone in 60 Seconds' you talked me into it;)

I dunno underpowered tiny cars are incredibly fun to drive fast, you get that fun sensation of the brink of sliding out of control and can put the pedal to the floor all while staying under the speed limit. That and most handle like gokarts and who doesnt like gokarts. Drive the crap out of a 90's ford fiesta and tell me it wont get a big grin on your face. :P

Harold Lloyd - "Speedy", 1928; "Get out and get under", 1920.

W.C. Fields - "Sally of the Sawdust", 1926 - Fields chasing bad men / being chased by bad men on the then-rural Long Island Parkway. Fields is driving a T, bad men are in a Cadillac?

Michael Keaton - "Johnny Dangerously", 1984

Humphrey Bogart - "High Sierra", 1941, bad man Humphrey Bogart flogs the livin' hell out of '37 Plymouth coupe, eluding cops in big Buicks.

Underpowered cars at full throttle reminds me of how I used to drive my A. I once took a curve on 2 wheels, only once!

Interesting trivia about Bogie's car(s) in that movie - the Plymouth kept morphing between a 37 and a 38 (similar to 37 but shorter, wider grill). Apparently the studio had one of each and used them interchangeably.

Kinda like Desi & Lucy in "The Long-long Trailer". They alternated between a Mercury convertable & a Lincoln Capri while pulling the trailer.
