It's gonna be a long day tomorrow. We have to be at the judges breakfast at 7 sharp, which means 6:45! Judging starts at 9. Dad and I are both on the 36 open/closed team and we have five cars to judge. Hopefully they will all be beautiful and easy to judge, but we'll see. Wayne Handy from Mechannicsville VA is our deputy judge. I judged with Wayne in Charlotte two years ago at my first national meet, and he's a swell guy.
Will post a report tomorrow, don't know how many photos I'll get to take because of the judging commitment. Vic, an RC cola and a moon pie sounds like a meal! We saw signs for the Goats on the Roof but didn't stop. I guess we missed something. I coulda got that coonskin cap for JM. -VeryTangled/Jeff |

Jeff, you didn't miss much (except Coonskin Caps) at Goats On The Roof...
![]() Hopefully you'll be able to sample some North Georgia breakfast, biscuits with honey, sausage, grits, etc., sure wish I was there…

Vic, we need to put together another great tour through those mountains again this year as part of the Barner's Gathering for the Moonshine Festival. We can all plan on getting coonskin caps and wearing them at Thunder Road and downtown Dawsonville
. We would probably be the most well recognized group at the show .

Hope all of you have a great time at the meet. I see a lot of familiar names at the meet, all great V-8ers who I have met over the years when I attended eastern meets. People who don't go to national meets have no idea of all the fun they are missing!

Jeff, I hope you and Henry are not being to tough on judging those '36 cars on the show field
. Keep the pictures and stories of the meet rolling in here. Did you give Jon his license plate bracket? Having a great time here in OC but still missing being around those nice old Early Ford V8's and all my V8er friends . Oh well, looking forward to the GNM in '13 and ENM in '14.

Too tired to do a report.
Show field was impressive. Max temp 87 but seemed hotter. Altitude increases the sun's power. Not just a couple of disappointed guys whose car's didn't make the 990 point barrier to earn the Dearborn award.Dad and I judged five cars, four '35's and one '36. We'll probably get lucky because I think we're the only car in our non-point judged class! Vic, the judges breakfast featured Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, Grits, Bacon, and Scrambled Eggs. I went back for seconds! I think I've had grits at least three times since Sunday, and that's only because we've had breakfast twice at Mickey-D's and for some strange reason they don't serve 'em. Yum. -VeryTangled/Jeff Last edited by VeryTangled; 06-21-2012 at 02:14 PM. |

If you can figure out how to get there, I've uploaded over 160 photos to PhotoBucket. My account there is VeryTangled, and the name of the album is "Early Ford V8 Eastern NM Hiawassee 2012." It may require registering for a free account.

Randy, That's a very good question. Our National Meets run either 4 or 5 days, having multiple activites and attractions for the members attending. As transportation to and from the meets must always be a consideration, having a weekend at each end of the meet is advantagious for most members in attendance. We also try to schedule meets during summer school breaks, and schedule multiple meets across the country at 2 or more weeks apart, also to accommodate travel plans for those who are able to attend more than one meet a year. There have been meets in most areas of the country, even across the border in Canada, often in locations never befoore hosting a meet, recognizing that many V8ers just can't get away to go cross country for fun. You could say our goal is to "Leave No V8er Behind"

Randy, if you're close to North Georgia and would like to attend an excellent event, we are planning on having another "Barner's Bash" in Dawsonville, GA the same weekend (Friday - Sunday) as the Moonshine Festival, October 26th -28th. The Moonshine Festival features Flathead Fords on display around the Courthouse "Shine Cars" as well as other makes from the '30's to the '60's, in addition there is always another car show held just down the street at Thunder Road (NASCAR Museum). Usually there are several hundred cars and we ("Barner's Bash") do a tour of our own in the North Georgia Mountains. I’ll be posting more info on both the Moonshine Festival and the Mountain “Barner’s Bash” here on the FordBarn as well as on the ChevyBarn (non-Chevy) page. Hope you can make it. ![]() Vic

Vic, Dad says they wanted 24k. He says it's worth 60 perfectly done. It would take all the difference and a lot more to get there. It was in pretty rough shape. I don't think there was much of an interior to work from.
I've always been told I was brought home from the hospital in a 40 Merc Sedan Convertible, like this car, and Dad pines for them often. This one didn't spike his blood pressure so it musta been beyond reasonable hope. Stupid person story: That trailer was parked just about one small car width away from KenCT's motorcycle trailer. You can see his camper in the background and Ken's trailer is just out of the frame to the left. The owner of the Merc was towing it with a Lincoln SUV. After dropping the Merc's trailer, someone was moving the Lincoln into the spot between their trailer and Ken's and don't you know they whacked Ken's trailer and bent it more than a little bit. I heard it happen from a good distance away. I spoke with Ken this morning and he was able to unbend part of it but not all of it. And it's bent in just the wrong place where one of the tie-downs for his Triumph goes. Poopheads! Oh yeah, also they had an ez-up I was trying to help them put up. They said had been blown over at an airshow by a BlackHawk. It was bent six ways to Sunday but they thought they might get it to work. It was junk, almost like that Merc. I'd avoid the Merc just from the bad karma following the owners. As for the show dates, we rolled out on a Sunday morning arrived on Monday noonish after a 650 mile trip. Will start home before noon Saturday for a Sunday arrival back home. I took a week off to do a show that runs from Tuesday thru Friday. When you think about it, it works out pretty well. The hosts get weekday rates from their vendors. The attendees get to arrive early and leave late to get the full flavor of the event. I've learned to do as many activities as possible that are connected to the event. Some of the stuff that seems like it might not be fun surprises me how much of a hoot it can be. I also saw more youngsters (under 30, many under 15 years old) at this meet than I've seen at the three other national meets I've done. Getting 'em involved when they are really young is key to the future of the preservation of the cars for future generations (a prime goal of the Early Ford V8 Club). Once they are teenagers I guess it's harder to get their juices flowing. For everyone, if you look at the PhotoBucket, start at the end and work forward. For some reason they put the first uploaded picture at the bottom of the stack. So the first picture you see, is the last one I uploaded. I guess it's a 'feature.' Also some of the photos, especially the car collection and shots of the Schwinn bicycles, were taken by Cecil. Those bikes were the thing to have when I was about nine years old. I'm having so much fun hanging with my Dad, it's hard to describe. Seize the day y'all! Off to bed now. We're doing a train ride tomorrow, schedule says from 9a to 4p and $44 per head. We'll see what happens. -VeryTangled/Jeff |

Jeff, thanks for the info on the Merc,
too bad its in such bad shape, I'd like to have a Merc Convertible (preferably a '39 Convertible Club Coupe) to go with the '39 Ford CS & '39 LZ Convertible Club Coupe... Tell your dad that he missed the mark on the value of a restored '40 Merc CS... A '39 Ford CS just sold at auction for $165,000...![]()

Jeff, thanks for keeping us posted on the meet. I'm sure it's a great feeling to spend time with your Dad doing something you both really enjoy. You guys have a safe trip home.
