Will the glass bowl fuel pump fit my 39 Ford? I have both kinds of pumps and the original type does not pump fuel.Maybe a new diaphragm is in order. A glass bowl pump that I have seems to pump when I bench test it but not on the car. Comparing the arm on both pumps, the original pump appears to have the arm mounted lower in the casting and thus better contact with the push rod. The push rod does go up and down about 3/8". Is that enough?

Turn the engine over until the push rod is exposed to its maximum length, then set the pump on the intake, making sure the rod and the pump arm engage. Then push down on the pump and see if it makes a pumping noise. Make sure the pump goes all the way down until it is resting on the manifold. If it does, then the length of the arm is the correct length and it should pump. If not it is probably the diaphram.

Some pumps have a big washer on the outboard side of the laminated arm, just behind the cup. This type will not drop down as far as the ones w/o the washer. Either pump will work on a 39. Correct 39 pump has the off-set inlet an outlet holes. Very difficult to find and command top dollar as cores. These are all metal ones.Glass bowl came out in 47. ken ct. Your problem could also be a non-functioning valve in there. ken ct.
