Go find yourself a NOS bendix! I tried one in my car and it was junk. Made all sorts of noises when it disengaged. I found a nice used bendix for my car and it works like new. Just my 2 cents worth.

The late type bendix can have clearance issues while installing the starter but other than that they work OK. I believe they use a one way clutch set up in the late types where the early one doesn't need it. Both types will wear out in service but I always liked the sound the old style system makes when the gear gets thrown out.

I have one on my Model A and one on my 40 Ford. There accually made for industreal engine. You don't have to worry about braking a bendex spring even with 12 volts. BUT, I understand there's a little problem getting the starter back in on the 8AB engine. Somone said they do a little grinding bell housing and they will go in. Walt
