What month in 1931 did steel top & wide bed pickup come out?
Can anyone with the service bulletins tell me what month in 1931 the steel top pickup came out?
Also what month in 1931 did the wide bed come out? Is the wide bed rear fender bracket the same as any other model? Does anyone have a wide bed passenger side rear fender and/or both rear brackets for sale? Thanks, Neil |

I don't have the service bulletins here in front of me, but what I can tell you is that Ford, in their usual manner, produced in the changeover period, pickups with indented firewalls and non indented firewalls, steel tops and fabric tops, and wide beds and narrow beds, in all sorts of combinations. Mine has the indented firewall, steel top, but narrow bed. My friend has the same only with the wide bed. I have seen pictures of wide bed, fabric tops with non indented firewalls. It was if "Anything Goes, as long as it goes out the door."
Look on the swap meet, there are a pair of fenders for the wide bed listed on there. |

Steel Top introduced in August and production started in September, that's based off of memory and I think it comes from Henry's Lady or the Model A As Henry Built It.
I want to say May for the widebed. -Tim Last edited by WTSHNN; 06-01-2011 at 04:30 PM. |

the wide bed fender bracket is only 10" wide, I knew of one for sale, will check and send a p.m. You could use a standard coupe roadster pick-up stamped steel bracket and remove 2" and weld back together. The fenders mentioned above are pretty rough. I was super lucky about a month ago and found a NOS wide bed pass. fender at a local auction for $170.00, sorry, its going on my mail truck.

Neil,
My information is that the Budd build steel top closed cab started production in August 1931. And, the soft top Ford build closed cab continued production at that time also until sometime in late 1931. I don't do A's so I am no help on the pickup bodies. |

My truck has all the late features except is still a soft-top. I always thought it was built in May but the number on the pink slip does not match anything, probably a DMV number? I have never had the body off so don't know the frame number.

Bringing an old thread back to life here to ask a basic question: How wide was the "wide bed" box?
I have seen 40-3/4" quoted for regular bed width. Never seen the number for the wide bed. Thanks.

According to the Ford Garage website, the Budd steel top was introduced in August 1931. They have some good closeup photos of them:

According to Hemmings website: "~Wide bed, designed by Briggs, used the Ford code of 78-B, and it was first offered in May of 1931. This bed had straight sides, unimpeded by inner wheel arches, and a 16-gauge steel floor; its cargo capacity was 22.2 cubic feet, up from the previous 16.5 cubic feet, via its 59.4-inch length, 46-inch width and 16.7-inch height. The aforementioned narrow rear fenders were internally coded A-16168 (right side) and A-16169 (left side)". source: http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/..._feature9.html

Thanks. I also started a new thread because it seemed everyone was answering the original topic and not reading my question.
