Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt
I know this has been mentioned in the past, but I don't recall if a picture was ever posted, so here's a picture of the round felt that fits around the adjustment screw and is held in place by the cover. This keeps out the dirt and maybe some water. I oil it when I oil the other 2 felts on the motor shaft.

Yep, they are almost always missing, but are easy to make.
Just like a generator that hasn't been taken apart, then all the good original parts should still be in place, and this horn looks like it was never messed with. |

Re: Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt
I just installed a new Sparton. So what I get from this is to lightly oil the felt and not put oil directly on the shaft?

Re: Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt
Doesn't the felt on the adjustment screw interfere with the positive click of the screw itself? The screw should click-click-click as you adjust the horn because it settles into detents on the arm. Doesn't the felt get in the way? Or is it outside those notches?

Re: Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt
The felt fits around the screw. You can see the line on the screw head where the felt touched it. You can also see how the felt got water soaked and left it's rust mark on the steel around it. That's another reason I like to keep it oiled.
On the left you will see the correct cover screw, which limits how far you can tighten it by the number of threads. Also notice the correct way to install the wire terminals is to push them in from the ends of the clips. The second pictures shows the gritty mess on the brushes that I just spoke about, which wears out the commutator bars. |

Re: Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt
Great thread, happen to be searching this subject and wonder if my horn is well odd.. The single long, very long screw that hold the back cover and the back cover then holds the side cylinder is well a _____! to get the screw back in... Is this some what common? I go it back in was a dang trick with my poor vision
