Default Fordlandia

I heard this on NRP a few weeks ago and then stumbled upon the video just this morning. Ford's "invasion" of Brazil has always interested me and while this mini-documentary isn't very detailed, the images are fantastic.... To read the rest of this blog entry from The Ford Barn, click here.

I'm reading this book now, very interesting. Available from Amazon.com, I'm reading it on my Kindle.

Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City

Thanks for the info.

I read the book a while back. As I was reading it, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the folks who had to work there. It seemed like they were working under impossible conditions. I'm glad that the project was finally abandoned.

They had this subject as a Trivia Question on the Mecum Auto Auction yesterday on Velocity. Interesting story.

Some of the buildings are still there but synthetic rubber was the last straw of the whole thing. You should read the book not only has stuff on the plantation but Ford and company background as well.

The whole idea was to source a cheap supply of rubber as at that time the British controlled the rubber market. Henry believed they kept the price set high but he spent way too much money & time starting Fordlandia, & the world price had dropped anyway.
It was probably a complete ''White Elephant'', but Henry could afford it to prove his point.
