32 Column Drop Disassembly
I need to change out the switch lever on a 32 column drop. How does one remove the ignition switch pin from the back side so the barrel will come out?
Thanks, Neal |

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
Grab it with vice grips as close to the base as possible and pull straight out using a screwdriver as a pry bar on the vice grips.

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
You need to get the cap off and it will come apart. I put screwdrivers in the top hole and drive the shaft down out of the cap. Be carefull or you will snap the lever off or bend the on off plate.

There's no cap involved until the 1935 model year.

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
You will also have to take the ignition lock cylinder out to remove the inner shaft that the lever go on. That may take drilling out the sunken pin that holds the lock cylinder in if it has never been apart before. Don't force anything internally.

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
Terry, OH is 100% correct. Jim OH is also 100% correct the lock cylinder must be out as well. Ohio has some smart folks ! Lotsa PB blaster is smart too. DavidG is right as well but he is in Michigan.......not Ohio.....

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
Someone sent me a PM and suggested grabbing the pin with ViseGrips and tapping on the
column drop with a small hammer. It worked like a champ...the pin pulled right out. Thanks for the suggestions...I am sure I will have more questions. Neal |

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
Hello If your original came out why do you need a replacment? These pins are special and were knurled on end that went into the inner shaft. If yours is not reusable you could use a split spring steel pin commonly known as a roll pin. They're available in many sizes. You should be able to pick one up at your local hardware store.

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
I have a couple of drops with broken pins. The easy way out is to buy them. If I have to I can cut and shape a nail to fill the bill.

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
Read everything shared here on disassembly, can anyone instruct me on removing the half moon key to separate the bolt and the plunger/spring on a 32 column ? Does anyone have the bolt and housings available ? Mine is scored, but may still slide smoothly.
thanks

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
I know this is an old post but I have a related question. What is the easiest way to replace the pin? I have a replacement but am afraid to break it by using the wrong replacement method. Thanks

Re: 32 Column Drop Disassembly
If the replacement is properly made, the striations around the lower circumference should line up with the slots in the hole in the back of the on/off lever enough to start the fit. A few taps with a small plastic head hammer will drive the pin in the rest of the way.
