Default Zenith carburetor

what does the embossed number 7 on the throat of the Zenith carburetor signify?

Are you sure it's not a Z?

It's a Z.

Manufactured by Zenith (H for Holly and no mark for Ford if it's a Zenith-3).

Zenith was the design holder for the carburetor, but they licensed it out to be manufactured by others to meet Ford's demand.

That's not the whole story. Zenith 1: Made by Zenith. Zenith 2: made by Holley. Zenith 3: Made by Ford. All internal parts interchangeable. Numbers and stampings on Carburetors changed through the Model A era. The Model A Judging Standards has a comprehensive chart on the evolution of the Zenith style carburetors. Well worth the research. Other manufacturers such as Tillotson have their own characteristics of which I am not privy.

The complete story of identification of all Zenith, Holley, Ford and early cast iron after market carburetors used on Model A's is chronicled in The Restorer magazines published by the Model A Ford Club of America.

Volume 61 issue 6 (March/April 2017) through Volume 62 Issue 4 cover the varieties of Zenith and Ford.

Volume 67 Issue 4 (Nov/Dec 2022) through Volume 68 Issue 1 cover the varieties of Holley.

I was able to expand on details that I could not include in the Judging Standards in these series of articles. I am sure a club member near you would share copies with you. Enjoy!
