Default pan gasket 8BA

Do you leave the pan gasket on top of the rear main seal or cut it back so the
seal touches itself?

Thanks

useing modern seal in front

The seal end tips, as pressed into the aluminum retainer part in the block, should only make contact with the corresponding seal end tips that are in the back seal lip of the oil pan.

The type of seals you have could vary since some manufacturers make them differently from graphite impregnated rope instead of the original type rope. The OEM overhaul manual for the Lincoln and Mercury cars from 49 thru 51 mentions not to trim the ends that stick out proud of the retainer lips but I've seen some that are a lot longer than the original so it makes things more complicated during the process. They want the rope seals to be compressed in there but the crank has to be able to turn as well. The gasket should only butt up to the edge of the seal end tips. It should not interfere with the rope seal at all but the end tips sometimes need to be trimmed a bit to get everything to fit together right. Just be careful not to over trim them. You can use a dab of sealer where they butt up together but it may just end up getting squeezed out of there too.

I hope this helps you some.
