Default Spindle ID?

Remembering getting later spindles for my '36 when converting to hydraulic brakes but don't remember what year they are; I can see a "68" on one of the spindles which would make me think the spindles were '36 but they bolt directly to the later backing plates without adapter rings. I would like to sell these spindles but not sure what year to advertise them as. Thanks

The '36s have a longer "snout" so the hub/drum won't seat to the backing plate if later hardware is used. They'd be good for the '36 only person.

If your spindles bolt directly to later style backing plates with NO spacer ring they are anywhere from 37-48 style. I think the 68 you see is actually a 78. To correct another post the 36 spindles have the shorter snouts and will accept the later drums with no bearing spacer.

Okay Dick, correction noted, and since you make your living with this kind of stuff who better to turn to for a clarification. The snout on the '36 front hub/drum is longer than the '37-9 (I've sold all my old '36 parts so from memory seems it was around 1" longer) so with bearing spacing being the same where is that length compensated for? Is it that the mechanical brake backing plate "rolls" back further on the spindle mounting surface, or....? And presumably that would also mean that the rod actuated mechanical brake has a different orientation from the cable operated form on '37-8? It would help me to know.

Uncle Bob, the snout length on the 36 spindle is the same distance as the 37-48. The difference is in the drums and the backing plates. The index is different with the 35/6 brake surface centering further inward than the later 37 and up style so the 36 hub has a longer snout to index the braking area further inward.
