35 Ford Brake Work
I've purchased some NOS mechanical brake wedge studs and they don't have
any cotter pin holes in their ends. These studs are incredibly hard and I haven't been able to drill them even with my cobalt bits. Any suggestions as to how I can penetrate these babies? Peter |

Use a split washer ,or cut a slot with 1/16 cut of wheel ,then run a dye on back wards ,braze up 3/4 s of the slot ,then run the diy nut off .Or heat the end red hot then dump it in Ash to cool it .that will soften it .Ted

Re: 35 Ford Brake Work
The bolt on the bottom of the brake backing plates. The brake wedge fits over this bolt. In 35 it was a bolt affixed with a nut and cotter pin. In 36 it changed to being a rivet. All the 48-2053 Front, I have seen have the cotter pin hole. 48-2223 on the rear wheels also has the cotter pin hole. My GUESS is you have a probably much later replacement that is supposed to use a special lock nut.

Re: 35 Ford Brake Work
In my 28-37 parts book (printed july1945) it shows castle nut with cotter in 35, try and look in the "green book"---postwar many castle nuts werte replaced with marsden nuts---a self locking nut, this reduced costs by a lockwasher, cotter pin, the production operation of drilling, chamfering the cotter pin hole and the labor to install them,

Re: 35 Ford Brake Work
Thanks to everyone for your comments. As a matter of interest I'll try Ted's
suggestion about heating the end which I'm sure will adversely affect the hardness. Peter |
