There was a "period set" of dies that hinged for repairing axle threads on Epay a while back, I just did not bid hard enough. Good to know there is a modern alternative. Can anyone provide the thread and size one would need for a 32-4 steering arm sector thread? I have a very good original 15-1 34 steering gear that someone hammered. Have tried grinding and thread chasing with special files to no avail.

7/8-14. My dad has (and I regularly borrow) his uncle's old split/hinged thread chaser. It has 5/8 up to 1" I think.

Probably more than I have. I didn't know this was going to degenerate into some sort of one upsmanship contest. As old Billy Shakespear said "A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet." or "A rose by any other name is still a rose."

I was trying to offer other Barn'ers the service of fixing their parts for almost free. I thought about $5 a thread. I thought some would like to get their axles and steering shafts done at a swap meet. I go to the Texas swaps and could do it without all the shipping costs. It would be far better than scrapping the parts or buyng expensive tools. I can't beleive all the smart remarks posted earlier. I do my best to help people and think it is out of place to ridicule someone when you have no idea what you are talking about. I posted a tech on the HAMB about removing perch bolts with no hammering. Some of you might want to look at that for info.
I just happen to have a fairly big pile of them …. They should / need to come your way.
Thanks

51 merc --- that isn`t what i thought andy was talking about. those adjustable little giant dies were and are very common and the standard of the industry. excellent quality. as you probably know you can still buy the dies from cleveland. i have 2 complete sets in n.f. and n.c. they will work well on some threads as a backward chaser if you have enough room to get it on the bolt. e.g. i think they would be too thick to work on a spring perch mounted on the car. i thought some of the posts were talking about a lot thinner and smaller die nut that was somehow hinged so you could get it on the bolt and turn it with a wrench or socket. thanks for your input.--- barry

I've yet to read one of Andy's posts that DIDN'T contain something worth consideration or merit, either here or on the HAMB. He's not one to "flap his gums" just to increase his post-count. I'd bet that most of you don't have a clue as to what this guy has accomplished in his past. Andy is worth listening to without snide remarks. DD

As posted by experts, I am using the dies made by Little Giant. I am happy with the results. The nuts go on smoothly with no more clearance than original. I have repaired one set of 32 perches, one set of 35's, and one 40. I think they would have been scrap without the re-threading. The end threads were shashed so a nut could not start. I would show a before and after but I don't have any others ready to go. I will try to re-thread Barn'ers part for $5 a thread to pay for the dies but more importantly to save parts. PM if interested.

Thank you DD!
