Default 97 Production change or 81 Carb Top

I brought this carburetor top home today hoping it would be a good replacement for the damaged top on the raised letter LZ. Upon comparing I noticed that the top I brought home has a hole for the choke shaft and a pin boss and both of my LZ's have a threaded hole, choke shaft home and a pin boss. So definately not the same. What is up with the the one that I planned to use as a replacement? I am not sure it is design change at some point or the top for an 81 or something else.

Also curious what was the meaning of the raised letter LZ and the stamped letter LZ? Different year? Thanks Rod

It would be nice if I had them matching, but not a must. Would likely be interested in a straight across trade only for the stamped 97. Flat broke with bill collectors calling daily so could not do any cash transactions as its simply not there. Looking forward I am still one carb short of what is needed for all 3 projects. Going to run 2 on the AV8, one on the Model A delivery and one on Dad's coupe. Have a regular large number 97 also, so whatever I get that ends up being a matching pair will end up being paired up on the AV8 and the other 2 on Model A's Rod

ROD,the top in the 4th pic [top only] is from a model 48.They do not have the spring loaded pin on them. This top will not work on a 97.The 48 also has a slightly diff choke accuating kicker. That other one stamped LZ either was blank there [which some are] or was a 97 originally and was filed off and hand stamped "LZ" OMO. ken ct.

Thanks Ken, I honestly thought the 97 and 48 tops were the same and the 81 would be the oddball. The flat spot does not look like it was filed off. Knowing where I got I can not think of a reason they would. That local shop where it was at had been, closed in 1988. The family finally sold the stuff off in 2010. It was mainly a body shop. Bought lots of neat stuff at that auction including a 1933 Harley igntion and light switch, KRW combination machine base and the correct wiper motor for my delivery. Ton's of body tools to boot. Only spent alittle over $300. Rod

There where never any LZ which is stamped. It's probably someone who made it afterwards. You've seen these carburetors for sale occasionally. Could be to increase the price then real LZ are difficult to obtain. As they were only at -36-37 models. This is arguably the finest of Stromberg carburettors. Going with them on my AV8.

No Rod the 48 is the oddball here. 97 + 81 are identicle to each other. They are interchangeable not the 48. ken ct.
