Default Windshield Hinge Gasket

Does anyone know if the rubber windshield gasket or seal is an original piece or is this an addition to help keep out the water. The rubber gasket goes between the windshield top hinge and the header panel.
With the seal I have no gap at the bottom of the windshield to the belt rail on top of the gas tank. Without the seal I have a good fit.

Any ideas?

I tried to install one in my Victoria and had clearance problems so I discarded it and used dum-dum between the hinge and header and the windshield closes much better.

They don't fit my 28 coupe but I managed to get one in on Dad's 29 Tudor. (At least one of us is dry diring the rainy season) I heard the repops are too thick where they mount but better where they seal?

My Leatherback Victoria had an "original" rubber windshield hinge gasket installed when I took the car apart. I used a repro rubber gasket when I put the body back together. It does make for a tight fit. Bottom of windshield frame does not hit top of cowl belt rail so I think it is OK. The new rubber gasket might be slightly thicker than the "original".

My coupe has a repro rubber (from 1970), the windshield fits good, I also have original wood, another coupe locally that was restored with new wood has windshield fit problems, hits gas cap, the lower part of header wood wasn't formed quite right, pushes the header metal down, the metal can't fit flat to wood where windshield hinge screws, opening is 1/4" smaller than mine. ---repro rubber won't fit the car and have windshield close properly, the flexing of the repro aluminum upper hinge helped when the window was forced closed.

Thanks for the help Guys: I'll go back to the strip caulking. And we should be good.

My father reworked my car in the mid 60's and it looks like he used a fiber material that is beige in color much like the Manila Brown of the Station Wagon.... It’s very thin and though probably not original, the upper hinge area has never leaked.
