I have two SBF 302s Ive been messing with and I am having water pump issues. I have a 1974 Van 302 v-belt with a 3 bolt crank pulley and a passenger side exit water pump. Next I have a 1990 mustang 302 with serpentine belt, 4 bolt crank and reverse rotation driver side exiting water pump. I originally wanted to install the Mustang 302 in My 50 Ford using the v-belt parts from the van motor. The Van has a 3 bolt crank pulley as the mustang has a 4 bolt... what years had the 4bolt v-belt crank and where could I find them??...in addition to the passenger exit, the van water pump shaft is shorter than the mustang reverse flow....(see pic)
Does anyone know of a regular flow water pump with driver side exiting that would fix the mustang motor? In the last few weeks I found a Ford F1 to but the van motor in but I would also like to but a driver side exiting pump on that one too to work with the radiators I have. Sorry if I have confused anyone and need to do more explaining lol.. Thanks Guys Last edited by THR1LL3R; 08-06-2012 at 11:34 PM. |

See if this helps- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=303600
Complicated Subject. You also have to match timing covers to the pump style. FORD RACING PARTS also offers a damper that is drilled for both 3 & 4 bolt pattern if that will help.

Check into an older Mustang water pump, like a 1967 or so. If I recall, they had the drivers side dump.

Ive read that thread and it makes my head hurt. This is turning out to be a nightmare, really just want to swap to something common if im on the road incase I break down. Guess Ill by an early mustang and start from there. Too bad theres not a water pump year chart.

It is a lot of confusion. That one post in the thread I showed gets pretty close to the correct answer. There is a book called rebuilding SBF or something to that nature that does have the complete interchange information.
I was going to do a study on this some years back but I got sidetracked with MEL. Let me try and find that book. As these engines have been around since 1962, they had a lot of upgrades over the years (including 5.0L tech).
