29 model a transmission shift lever
Hey guys, I just bought a 29 tudor. Looking inside the car,on the shifter, driver's side, is a small lever with a small diameter rod going down into the trans.
What does this little lever do. Thanks, Tony |

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
I suppose it's a 3 speed. This car hasn't run in over 35 years. This owner doesn't know what it's for either. He brought it home way back, drove it a couple times, been sitting ever since. ( last pa. inspection 1957 )

Picking the car up on Saturday morning, I'll get some pictures then. The car is tucked away, better pictures when it's outside

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
The lever looks something like the one on the shifter. It was dark in the car, I'll have a better look and try the H pattern Saturday morning.
So I may have a very low 1st gear instead of overdrive. |

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
If it is a 4-speed you lift the little lever and reverse is all the way to the right and back. Bob

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
I had a AA 4speed in my 31 coupe and loved it. You still have an H pattern but upper left is gramma instead of reverse. That's what you need the lever for. I could climb trees with that thing.

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
I doubt very much this is an "overdrive transmission"...
Most US pre-1950's truck four-speeds had this "reverse lock-out latch" lever... I don't know about Ford and Dodge, but Chevy / GMC had the reverse latch through 1947; when the Advance Design trucks came out in mid-'47, they offerd the new SM-425 four-speed, which eliminated the reverse-latch, and put reverse "all the way towards the driver, overcoming a strong spring, and back towards the seat" (parallel to 2nd gear.) |

Re: 29 model a transmission shift lever
Awesome! Thanks for asking the question. I just inherited a 28 coupe with the same lever. I figured it was a reverse lockout, but had no idea it was a AA 4 speed transmission.
