10w was recommended. It only takes a small amount. Turn the hub to the 10 o'clock position, remove the plug and slowly fill to the top.

You use whatever weight of engine oil that is recommended for the season. You put 1 oz. in the screw hole at the top then turn it upside down and let it drain out. See owner's manual instructions below.

I don't know about 42-48 but my 49 F1 said 30 weight and fill and drain as OLD henry said.

May depend on the year, but fans changed in 42 (4 blade 16 inch) and again in 46 (4 blade 17 inch) Also a 6 blade was available. These fans were mounted higher for better cooling. A Ford service letter changed the lube from engine oil to a EP Lube. I have always used 90 wt in both my 46"s with lots of miles and still no fan shaft problems. I think this info was in The V-8 Clubs 41-48 Ford Book, which is at my shop.

The lube instructions on the fan decal and the Owners Manual were never changed and I know there were problems with some fan shafts. I remember someone figured a way to install bearings because of shaft problems. TOM..

On this same subject, I just rebuilt my fan hub(with new parts), put recommended oil, drained, etc.
But now every time I spin it and come back in a few minutes there is oil on the floor. It's not leaking from the front gaskets, but out the rear. I thought there should be some sort of seal there, but was told Ford didn't have one there.
