Default rookie mistake

I think I just made a rookie mistake of draining the transmission (gearbox?) oil instead of the crankcase oil.

What to replace it with? 600W?

How much?

600 weight oil is right. You can get it from most Model A vendors. Fill it until oil starts to come back out the fill "pipe" on the side of the tranny.

And when you do drain and refill the engine crankcase put 4 quarts in then check the level on the dipstick...it is a 5 quart capacity but that is on a dry engine...about 1 quart is held in the dip tray.

And don't run your engine until the transmission has been re-filled....there are lots of moving parts in there that spin even if the car is in neutral and stationary....

I use 140w gear oil. But if you have 600w, use it......

To correct #2 response 600 W is a name, it is not 600 weight. Yes 140 weight is a close substitute as #3 response indicates..

Any good high pressure gear oil is satisfactory for spur cut gears and ball bearings if you want to get fancy use synthetic 85/140,it has superior properties to Dino oils due to consistency.

Any of the vendors will sell you an oil that will works fine.

If you want to get some elsewhere here is what works,

From a good post from Kevin in NJ,

https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showp...7&postcount=15

I fill until full but these are from my notes;
600W Oil Usage Specifications

Transmission 1 pint
Rear End 1-1/2 Quarts
7-tooth Steering Box 7-3/4 ounces
2-tooth Steering Box 4-1/2 ounces
