There was an "accessory" steering wheel sold by Ford
dealers back in the early fifties. It was exactly like a
Crestliner wheel except it was Ivory in color and intended
to be fitted to a 49 to 51 Ford. ken

The cracks could be repaired with epoxy and the wheel refinished.

The wheel was a cracked piece of junk when I got it. I restored it myself, so I know that it is an original, it is also 17 inch. The horn ring is original style twist in mount, it has light pitting and flaking and also has a ford number cast in to it. I will post the number when I get home from work.

I say that because the space between the end spokes of the horn ring and the edge of the corresponding notch in the steering wheel is excessive. Looks like a recast wheel to me. Do you also have all the components that attach the horn ring to the steering wheel and do they look look fresh and new as in a repop casting? What are the casting numbers or logo on the horn ring. Is there FORD part #? I have attached a photo of the repop sterring wheel and horn ring sold by Limeworks.

8a-3625-c

I found a few originals that have this number on the internet, so the problem appears to be in the wheel?

No doubt, your wheel is the real deal. A few years ago Limeworks was selling the repro horn ring with mediallion and all the parts. Might be cheaper than rechroming you horn ring.

When you first got the wheel and before you restored it, was the gap present? I wonder if there was more than one company making those parts for FORD? Looking at your photos it appears that the horn ring is "correct", but the steering wheel gap is not correct for a nice tight fit. You did a very nice job of restoring the wheel.
It does look good. You probably would be better off leaving it as is - unless it really is bugging you and you don't mind further restoration. You obviously have the skill.

Since you obviously have experience in steering wheel restoration, you could fill in the gaps to fit the ring. I know it's more work, but the final product will be worth it. Just an idea.

I have a Ford accessory wheel on my l949 Converible. It is ivory and has a full circle horn ring. To remove the horn ring there is two screws on the backside of the wheel had have to be removed. The original wheel was removed by pushing down and turning it ccw. Some of the these wheels have the horn ring boken off and look like yours. The embellum on mine is ring with good lettering. Not sure what you have?

Diagonally across the horn ring. Top left to bottom right. So the measurement of what the horn ring fills. I'd say it's probably a little less than 10 inches or a little over 11 inches.

Thanks Kevin

I measured my access. wheeel. The outside of the wheel measures 18", that is the same as the original wheels. The chrome round circle is 10".The diaginal measure on the chrome spokes is 10-1/2". I do not think that your is an original acces.wheel The real wheel is ivory and its all the way through. Not painted over a black casting, like the original std equipment wheel. The horn ring is mounted to the wheel with two screws that come in from the back into the center ring, it has a rubber ring under the center ring that is not sold anymore. I made one out of a hard foam weatherstrip material. Let me know if this helps you......
