*HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
Hey, for a '35 Ford Coupe flathead V8 does anyone have a good 'handy spares' list of what should be carried aboard for tours, local trips etc? Thanks

good insurance with towing or AAA
List your route & ask fellow barners along your route for help if you should need it. |

Tony, this stuff is carried just in case. "Anything mechanical is subject to failure at any time." It is better to be safe than sorry.

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
I agree with Tony. About all I ever carry is a crank handle, jack, wheel brace, torch, pliers, screwdriver, 6" shifta. My car has never broken down away from home, if it's going to misbehave, it'll always be within a block from home. Don't know what it is, but I do know the car pretty well. I think driving them regularly is the best preventative maintanance one can perform, because, as soon as you find something is not quite right, you can remedy it.
Really, there is not a lot of room in these prewar Fords, how do you fit in all that equipment listed above? Brian |

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
With all due respect, if you haven't had breakdowns, you haven't done much traveling with a 70+ year old car.
I built my car mechanically, and know it's limitations. It's taken my wife and myself through 19 states and a bit of Canada, with just once being towed when I was a Newbie. ( I vowed never again) I've had the following breakdowns and repairs done at the side of the road or with the hospitality of V8 Club members: Radiator removed/repaired, reinstalled due to fan walking off generator. Generator rebuild that precipitated the radiator repair a year later. Flat tire, tube replaced, old tube repaired for a spare. replaced inner cap due to carbon tracing condenser replaced. Fuel pump replaced. Carburetor replaced, rebuild kit installed in spare. headlight burned out twice. 18 tooth broken axle replaced with 16 tooth set & spider. Lube & oil changes at regular intervals Exhaust pipe bracket repaired with baling wire. Water pump pulley failure required pump replacement. For those who would have it towed, of course no tools or spares required. For myself, I would be too embarrassed to allow that to happen twice!

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
Paul (rumbleseat) once posted a list - It might be over on the tech tips site (billB). I think his list is likely similar to the one posted here. My philosophy... I carry (usually) a small collection of tools - they all fit in a small bread pan. Almost nothing for parts - I figure that whatever I need, will be what I didn't bring. I get the wife to bring a cell phone & AAA card. Haven't needed those, either. I usta try & carry a bunch of spares, but as posted, not much room for all the junk - so I leave the stuff at home. So far, so good. More than 10 years, and not on the hook, yet. One rule I set for myself, long ago... Things that are readily obtained at any parts store, I don't bring (oil, coolant, hoses, plugs). Other things, that are big, heavy (carb, gen, starter, axles), I don't even consider bringing. Sometimes I'll carry really small items, that are a 'pain' if you need them - a gen brush spring, set of points (one side only - it will run on one side), condenser, fuel pump diaphram. (Haven't needed these items, either.)
I used to carry water - thinking about overheating flatheads. I don't carry that, anymore, and we carry a case of drinking water bottles. I don't even carry a jack - probably foolish, but there always seems to be someone around with one, even if it's AAA. Haven't yet needed one. My range of travel is generally no more than 500 miles from home - so this influences what I do/don't carry. |

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
i might suggest a complete, tested good on your vehicle, distributor with coil, condensor.....then you know you have a good part that can be swapped onto your engine if necessary.....happy motoring....Mike

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
Two items is all you need if your car is mechanically in good shape. 1) V-8 Club roster 2) your cell phone.

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
OOPS I FORGOT the one thing I always carry is a big(not huge but nice size) good fire extingisher.
Never had to use it tho & make sure you tip it upside down & gently tap it to loosen the filling as it does get packed when traveling. |

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
Thanks for the list Alan, now I have the perfect excuse to buy a Teardrop Trailer.
FWIW I carry; Carb, Gen, Fuel Pump, Dizzy +Coil +Condenser, Inner Tube and Fan Belt, and the all-important Roster. I have broken down a couple of times, rather than being embarrased I have been delighted at how helpful people are when they see an 'old girl' in distress. And we (wife and I) have both enjoyed the 'happy accidents', like staying overnight in a Chalet in the mountains, and enjoying a dinner of Venison, a good bottle of local wine, and a huge cooked breakfast the next morning. Waiting for a Towtruck the next day, and enjoying meeting the locals who stopped to enquire about the car. Or having a guy help out with a battery one dark winters evening, then buying him and his wife dinner at a Cafe. Or, the time I was changing a Genny on the side of the road, a guy stopped and asked if I would be interested in buying a fully restored 1939 Ford Sidevalve engine for what it cost him to restore. That engine is now my spare, and he shouted us dinner at his restaurant that night. I rather like 'smelling the roses' along the way, being aware and alive to experiences we otherwise might not have. I rather like humans, after all, they are my species. |

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
Over the years, in several different cars, I carried no parts but had insurance with a good towing plan. Was lucky and only needed one tow. Bad generator.

Re: *HELP* WITH 1935 Ford
A spare condenser is a good idea these days, but make sure you run the car with the spare one for a while beforehand to make sure it works ok.
On a recent trip my Buddy was left without brake lights for most of the trip. One of those little brake light switches would have been handy. For what they cost and weigh, and the space they take, I'd add one to the spares list. Mart. |
