Default Stats for my '34

Those of you with '34 - stock 21 stud Flatheads - Other than Bob Shewman's thermostats, are there any other options out there??? I don't want to go higher than 160 degree stats....

I have seen several running with NO stats, I was under the impression that 180 is about right.

I think Ford recommended 155 degree stats....

My 34 has STA 13848. (two) I think that is Stant. I marked on my invoice that these are 1-3/4, 180 deg. If you want 160, maybe your local parts guy can cross the 13848 to an equivalent 160 stat? I did this in 2011, so I've forgotten details.

An easy option is to get a couple of commercially avail ones and tig weld them to a stainless tube, the same size as the top hose, then slip them in

That's what the Model A suppliers sell. Not sure if the tubing is the same size that you would need for v8.

Lawrie....I can only wish I could "tig weld"....

Carl....That's an excellent tip. I'll check the various Model A suppliers. I'll have to measure of the ID of the hoses....

Here's another (stupid) question with respect water flow - do the water pumps in the heads push the water from the heads and block into the top of radiator or vise-versa - they push the water from radiator top into the heads? I'm thinking about gravity's role in this....

From the pump into the top tank ,How about drilling the edges 3 small holes 1/16 and tying 3 bits copper wire on ,then slide them over the pump neck then the hose on top .Providing there's no other holes these three holes will help vent the cold water ,Ted

Ted....I humbled by your ingenuity. I think 'Old Henry' came up with an idea similar to this as well....Or did he get it from you?

Don't know yet if it will fit or not, but I found this one at Snyder's Model A Parts - http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/thermostat-507

As per post #8 Lawrie done this to my stats. Just a caution though. With a stock21 stud don't use high flow stats as in my case I ended up with fluctuating temp readings. Even after a long run it never settled down.

What I found when running states is the water will pump around any gaps and a hole bigger than about 1/8 allows enough water through to run cold and not function as intended ,when a quick warm up is wanted ,Ted

MOdel A thermostats are too big for 1 3/4" top hoses. I just tried the fit the other day.

I like Lawrie's idea, I'm fighting the t stats coming loose all the time as well.
What size tube did you use?

I have been wanting to put thermostats in my 36 21 stud but not sure if the stat should go on the neck of the pump or the top radiator neck. Also not sure of the orientation of the stat? If the water is flowing out of the pump into the top tank then should the stat have the spring to the engine? Any help would be appreciated.

STATS: I use Stant's 160 degree stats and even with 160's, my 24 stud 59AB normally runs at about 175 degrees even in summer. The stats only speed-up engine warming. I use stock pumps.

MOUNTING: Based on a comment I read in a tread, I hold the stats in-place on top of the outlet on the heads by having inserted one-inch high pieces of smaller rubber hose inside the stock hose .... held with a little rubber cement. Works fine. No drilling or fooling around. No restriction to flow since the inside diameter of the smaller piece of hose is same as the width of the flange on stat.
