'36 Ford spare tire lock HELP !!!
I know somebody out there has an original spare tire with a lock on it !!
If it's at all possible I could use a picture of it removed from the wheel or if there's a publication with a diagram of one.I'd like to save this one and I don't whant to drill it out.I have a lock smith working on it now but more help would be greatly appreciated..THANKS FORD BARN..... |

I just sent pictures to Glenn, which collectively illustrate the parts shown by Don as a working assembly. After inserting the key, I push inward on the assembly while turning to release the tension on mechanism so that the tabs will retract. Essentially, the locking mechanism is under some tension, and this needs to be "countered" by pushing it inward to get the lock to release. Of course, lots of penetrating oil is helpful if the mechanism is oxidized.

Mike, There is a set screw on the side of the larger mechanism with the levers. If you remove the set screw, the lock cylinder should come out.

In case you need it....I got help with the same situation from a guy in Missouri who has the Hurd key stock for cutting vintage keys etc. let me know .....tnx D.B.
