Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
There is an idler gear behind the flywheel that drives the oil pump off of the camshaft. I had a shop install the gear backwards so it was freewheeling. I was able to tell by pulling the oil pump out and looking up in there, I could only see half of the gear and I could spin it with a long screwdriver because it wasn't meshing with the cam. It's worth a look...

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
Check the gear on the back of the cam shaft. I had one come loose and no oil pressure. Had to pull the cam and have the gear drilled and a pin put in. Rare occurance but it does happen.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
Here's the gear. I bet it was not installed. Easy to forget. 8BA cover is also made of stamped steel. 51 Merc cover (shown) is cast.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
I do not understand why you are trying to fix a problem with a new build. Take it back to the builder. You are voiding any warranty that you may have had.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
Assembly lube dried up and blocking oil passages? Plug behind cam shaft gear missing? Crank clean out plugs missing? Sounds like you might have to tear it down and clean it. Mike

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
I can test your oil pump if you'd like.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
If you take the oilpressure sender out and fill it up with oil...then crank it with the port open you should see flow there even if there is a plug missing somewhere.
No flow the pump has to come out and be checked. |

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
When this first started did the gauge thing both electric and mechanical. With the port open oil dribbled out. The more I think about the hole above the cam gears ..lube hole..If there is plug behind that gear that area seems to be where I'm getting to much flow when I play air games. I just wanted idea where the problem was. I've pretty much figured I'd have to drain every and pull it out. The more informed I could be ahead of that would be in my opinion would good. Engine tear down and assemble does bother me, just messy to start with.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
I agree with chap52 take it back to the builder if he assembled it he’s the one who should stand behind it

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
The moral of this story is assemble your own engine. Cover all bases.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
Not much dissasemble to verify plug missing behind frontcover if the camgear is bolt on...a whole other headache with a press on gear.
Loosen front pulley tap it out a bit...unbolt front cover and camgear...should be able to do it in car. |

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
The early 8BA's also had a plug at the rear of block like the 59A and earlier engines.

OK pulled the front apart no plug behind the timing gear. I can't remember if there is a plug in the back. "flatheadmurre" gets the prize

Re: No oil pressure [8BA]
He can't go back to the builder as he bought it from someone else. The builder has no obligation to nailbender as the builder has no idea wheat may have happened to the motor by the first guy before nailbender bought it.
