Ford aod trans to a 292 ci y-block

Hi; Fordbarners I have a 1957 ford with a rebuilt 292 c.i and would like to know if anyone has put a Ford aod transmission on to the y-block I have seen a few articles on this change over but they seem awful pricey. Can anyone help me out here?.

A friend of mine has done this. Imported a kit from the US and yes they are pricey but if you can afford it, they are a great modification. With late model flexplates becoming more and more scarce these kits start to look attractive. You don't want o know what I was quoted from a supplier for one of these drive plates. The kits come with pretty much everything you need right down to the high torque mini starter.
You need to make sure if you use this transmission that the TV cable is properly adjusted as it is possible to turn a box to toast in a very short time.
At the end of it you end up with a real sweet driving ride.

Try Flat-O-Matic or Bendstens (sp???)

Bendtsen's http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm has a AOD to Y-Block adapter. Cost you ~$850 for the adapter kit plus the price of an AOD. I think you also have to have the driveshaft shortened. Not sure on that.

Flat-O-Matic makes the C-4 to Y-Block adapter. http://flat-o.com/carproducts/yblock.htm That's what I have in my Ranch.

Also http://www.transmissioncenter.net/aod.htm is a good source for the AOD and good pictures of the kit on the website. You may want to track down a 1986-88 Crown Vic driveshaft which will have the correct front yoke and should be close to the right length,measure before you buy it's cheap to have one shortened but not to have it longer.Your donor AOD should be from a 1988-92 these had all the factory upgrades and the improved valve body and are non-computer for EZ hookup,full size car AOD's are about 1 1/4" longer than the Mustang/Cougar units which may be good in your case.

My friend used the Bendsten kit which came with everything you see in the above link from Yblockhead. It is good value for what they supply and their comments are accurate. It really makes for a sweet ride . He used a lokar TV cable/mount from speedway motors. Took a little bit of massaging to fit it all up but well worth the effort.

Rick do you know what starter motor is used on the 292 ci I'm looking for the numbers and who makes it as I have a chance to bbuy a kit but there is not a starter motor. Thanks Dave
