Default tube shock kit for a '40 coupe

this morning, I reclaimed a tube shock kit from my "previously used" parts pile, both front and rear. It appears to be well designed and sturdy(that comes from one that has never seen one before.)

The front shock bolts to the front perch at the front axle and the rear shock bolts to the axle housing at the backing plate. As expected, the top connecton attaches to the frame. Each part appears to be factory made and apparently bolts/connects through existing holes and perches.

Comments?

What brand and model shocks would work well?

thank you,

fordman

If your shock mounts look like these I will try and read the data on my shocks for you.
Just let me know as different kits may use different shocks.

19Fordy,

No, mine does not set up like yours. In a couple of days, I will clean and set up a front and rear; a pic will be on the fordbarn soon after.

thank you for helping me,

19Fordy,

The shock kit is pretty well cleaned up and temporarily installed for analysis; it is similar to yours on the front. The rear mounts are a little different. Attached are some photos. Notice I taped in a loose bolt to show where I plan to drill a hole in the rear cross member and put in a permanent bolt.

Do you know the brand? The photos show the parts numbers.

I appreciate your comments and specs of the shocks, if you can see them.

thanks for the help,

fordman

7/3/11 Fordman, The shocks on the rear are MONROEMATIC.
Looks like the part number is F(then a circle with a dot.)F23F2D. There is also a T000. Original color is blue. I haven't gotten to the front shocks yet as I have to remove the wheels.

I sure was glad to get that information and looking forward to getting the info on the front shocks. however, it is not like I have to have the front shock info tomorrow.

Please keep the front shocks in mind and maybe you will have one of the front wheels off for some reason soon. If I get to the point of needing the info, I will make an humble request.....

My car has red wheels and WSW, was that original?

thank you,

fordman

Fordman, the old Ford barn had a tech page with a link to handy NAPA part numbers.

NAPA 94008 bolt in to the fronts if you have the upper attachment arm and the lower bolt with the 1/2" taper for the perch bolt.

This is a 41 but its the same as 40. The stabilizer arm isn't mounted yet in this picture but it bolts to the other studs on the perch bolt.

What about the rears for a 1947? Are these gas shocks? And are gas shocks ok for an old car?

I would get gas shocks from pep boys or something (Monro-Matic). I have KYB gas adjust on the rear of my '47 and they're waaay to stiff, the monro-matic is a softer shock.
