Re: Car trailer size
Sea Slugs: My tilt bed has a built in floor jack up front & the back couple ft. slant down slightly. It has an aluminum wind guard up front. It took a couple times of loading & unloading to get used to. Now I love it, no ramps to mess with. You jack the front up & the rear goes down. I slightly open the valve to release pressure & as I drive on the trailer it slowly goes down in the front. I also use it for my Kubota tractor. I made a quick on & off mount for a HF 5K lb. winch for loading non running vehicles. It has two heavy duty sliding lock pins that lock the bed in the lowered position. The trailer has electric brakes on both axles. WA. state requires brakes on both axles.

Re: Car trailer size
Put new tires on it....
trailers are in high demand in NJ and 700. and 1200. would be almost impossible to come by. I like to buy a new trailer, use it for a half dozen years and resell to get another new one. Because of having to replace tires, maintenance, etc. It is just easier.......... |

Re: Car trailer size
Here's my 29 Roadster sitting on a 16 ft. trailer with plenty of room. A 14 ft. should work fine for a Model A, but I wouldn't haul anything much longer than a Model A on it. Isn't that Von Wolfe a handsome fellow?

Re: Car trailer size
Many years ago I had a scary experience with my 28 CCPU and a borrowd trailer. I did not get it loaded correctly and the balance was off. Had to make a 65 mile trip at 30 mph to keep trailer from fishtailing. Got there safely though.
When I bought my 16' carhauler the mfg said it weighed 1135 lbs. I added spare tire and wench and ramps anc calculated 1200 lbs. Then added the weight of model A to get total of approx. 3500 to 3600 lbs gross trailer weight. The ideal trailer tongue weight on ball is 10 to 15 % of the gross trailer weight. I hitched trailer to new truck ('99 GMC at the time) , loaded 28 CCPU onto trailer. Put bathroom scale under toungue Foot/lift/support. Then unhitched the truck and moved it. Very carefully rolled CCPU forward until I had 350 lbs (10 % of Gross weight) on the scale. A 2 x 4 was bolted to the trailer deck at the front of the front tires. Anytime a Model A was loaded I could roll it to the 2 x 4 and have the correct weight on the toungue and hitch/ball of the tow truck. No guess work. No more fishtailing. ken |

You never know how much you can get on a trailer until you try...

Re: Car trailer size
All of us who load our "little treasures" on car trailers
need to remember the cheap trailer tires being sold today. Almost all of today's trailer tires are made in..... You guessed it....CHINA. California recently passed law no passenger car tires on trailers....good law. But we need good quality trailer tires....very hard to find! Gil. NoCal |

Re: Car trailer size
Now, that's strange because my friend has had bad luck with trailer tires on his trailer, and I've had good luck with car tires on my trailer. I try to buy nothing with rubber from China, but usually have no choice when it comes to bike tires and tubes.

Re: Car trailer size
I wonder what the problem could be with car tires, if rated properly?

Re: Car trailer size
Here's an update on the trailer I got, 20 foot,
I fixed the wench, put a new tool box on, installed a wood floor and painted it and fixed all the lights. I'm still under $1500 on it...and that includes all four wheel straps.

Re: Car trailer size
Trailer tires--
We are lucky, I guess, to have several trailer sales and service outlets in this area. Frankly, if the sidewall says 'trailer service' I don't think about where they were made. Rural area, farm stores, all should have good trailer tires. Some states, Texas included, have begun requiring trailers to be inspected, but farm trailers (like mine) don't have to be inspected. If you buy a new trailer, make sure it has new tires. I've seen a lot of new trailers for sale with used tires. "Oh. Well, they're extra," and I'm out the door. |

Re: Car trailer size
looks like a nice one, hope you used grade 8 bolts holding those D rings down :P, better insurance would be to have them welded to the deck with the bolts.
I highly recommend the LED trailer light kit from harbor freight. Ive had 2 sets for years and they are ridiculously bright and no issues with em.

Re: Car trailer size
Talking double axle here:
I carry two spare tires... Usually when one comes apart it takes out the one next to it |

Re: Car trailer size
Yes...LED lights.
Yes, grade 8 bolts and self locking nuts, extra large bottom washers. Yes on the brakes, but only the rear two, and I don't have those hooked up yet. And I don't have a spare, let alone two...how could I have missed that? Next on my list. With two spares...that should bring me right at $1500. As an added bonus I have it set up to carry my '57 Chevy too.

Question. Is it better to haul an open top Model A Ford with the car backed onto an open trailer, so the wind doesn't catch the top and yank it off at the wrong moment? Like meeting a semi truck on the road? Always been curious about this............. |
