Default New Record Cold Road Trip

ONE DEGREE!

This was as we entered Idaho Friday night on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation of the Shoshone-Paiute tribes on our way to visit our daughter in the Boise, Idaho area. It's my wife's best picture of the indoor/outdoor thermometer showing the outside temperature as we drove along the old two lane state highway from Elko, Nevada to Mountain Home, Idaho.

Fortunately, Old Henry had the new fresh air heater that Ford started installing in late 47 so we were nice and cozy warm inside at 72° (coulda been a LOT hotter but I have a variable control on the heater water to keep from being roasted out).

This was a new record low temperature while traveling on a road trip. Previous record low was driving to Milford three years ago with Old Betsy Williams for a very cold overnighter: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93137

Total distance in two days: 898 miles. No mechanical problems.

Great to see Old Henry running year around, even if it is cold outside.

Sorry, this wasn't really a "sightseeing" trip. We usually just take the shortest, fastest route to our daughter's in Meridian but I think it is the least scenic drive of anywhere I've ever driven. So, this time we decided to take a longer way and take the two lane from Elko, NV to Mountain Home, ID that was marked as scenic on the map since we'd never driven that road before. Most of it wasn't really any more scenic than the road to Grouse Creek I took a year ago (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130966) and looked much like it except the road was paved and clear of snow instead of dirt and snow covered as that one was:

I thought I'd seen every kind of rock formation there was but we saw some new ones along that road different than I'd ever seen but it was too dark to get a good picture by the time we were driving through them.

One thing I'd never seen before that I did have to stop and take a picture of was the double dams at Wild Horse Reservoir on the Indian reservation.

The nearer dam was built in 1937 to create the Wild Horse Reservoir on the reservation. Then, in 1969 a newer, higher one was built just below it that doubled the size of the reservoir. Thus, when the water gets to the top of the newer, higher dam in the summer the older, lower dam is covered up.

Other than that, we were driving mostly in very dense fog all the rest of the way to Meridian and from there almost to Utah on the way home the next day. So, no good pictures except of our grandchildren that we visited and celebrated the birthday of twin granddaughters just turned 9 this month.

Here's another scene from the Grouse Creek trip we saw Friday night, except it was fog instead of snow, until the spot light iced over and we were just left with the headlights.

One deg. F. is warm to a flathead! Back in the '40's Dad had a '40 sedan he had to park at the end of our 1/4 mile driveway before he had a tractor/loader to clear the snowdrifts. 30 below temps were not uncommon in southern Minnesota but the Ford always started. Sometimes he carried a teakettle of hot water to pour over the intake, but that water was probably only lukewarm after trudging 1/4 through the snowbanks. In 1951 he bought a new Nash. That one didn't start so good (had an automatic choke).

Even the straightforward, uneventful trips are great. Aren't they Craig. Wayno

Absolutely. I never leave on a trip with a goal to have some kind of mechanical problem to solve. I'd rather just drive and see what I went to see. But, when the problems come, I look at them as a challenge and puzzle to try and figure out how to get back on the road and have a great feeling of accomplishment when I solve it. I would certainly never avoid a trip just because I was afraid something bad might happen. Hopefully, no one would.

There goes global warming out the window! Prepare for the new ice age.
Maybe in several years the new goals will be to add CO2 to the atmosphere to keep us from becoming encased in a solid block of ice!
