Default Driving California Highway 1

AnnaRae took off for a 4 day "quilt retreat" last week so Pepe and I decided to drive Highway 1 from Santa Monica to San Francisco. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNIhFU1Bi_4 And here's the story.

We left early Tuesday morning headed down I-15 and made it to Barstow, CA that first night - 538 miles that day. Next morning we continued on to Santa Monica where we got on Highway 1 and headed north. Much of the first many miles were not particularly scenic, mostly driving through civilization down at ocean level. But, eventually we rounded the bend after Santa Barbara and headed north and out of the cities to some scenic stuff. This is Shell Beach just north of Pismo Beach.

One tough thing about driving that route this time of year is that it got dark so early - about 5:30 - so we had to stop for the night to avoid missing scenery driving in the dark. That happened at Moro Bay and Moro Rock for that night. Only 310 miles that day. Drove out onto Moro Rock. It was too dark for a good picture of it but got this nice one of Moro Bay from the rock.

Had to leave early the next morning to catch the first tour of Hearst Castle. This was as close as we could get in the car. Had to take their tour bus the 5 miles up to the castle.

One very interesting sight along the way was this Elephant Seal rookery just north of the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. The long white slugs on the beach are the elephant seals sunning themselves.

Then we continued on up the coast and started getting some real fantastic views from the road carved into the cliff above the ocean.

Sometimes the road had to be "tacked on" to the side of the hill.

Sometimes it had to be covered to keep the boulders off of it.

Of course, most places I stopped for a picture, someone wanted to get Old Henry in their picture. This woman had been at several stops. She's actually in the video.

Of course, no faithful classic car owner could not stop at Pepple Beach, the Mecca location of ultimate car shows.

When I stopped for gas at the next need, way out where there wasn't much, $4.67/gal, I found that I had driven for the last several hours with my "zipper down", i.e. gas filler door open. And, of course, no gas cap. I'd left it on the last gas pump. No worries, I quickly fabricated a temporary vented gas cap until I could get back to civilization to buy another cap.

Fortunately, the next place I stopped for gas after getting a new cap was at an ARCO station that had these real weird pumps without a top on them to put the gas cap. So, I put it in my pocket and will from here on out.

Getting toward the north end of our trip we reached Pigeon Point lighthouse, the tallest on the California coast at 115 feet tall.

Just after this we went through the Devil's Slide tunnel and headed for San Francisco. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHYlx8nMdQ8

Our first destination was to drive Lombard Street up to the top of Russian Hill then down the famous switchbacks and on to the other end to Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. This is at the top of the hill just about to head down the switchbacks. Telegraph Hill and Coit tower are our destination in the top left corner.

After taking a picture of Old Henry at the base of Coit Tower I was just getting back in the car when this little man with a strong Italian accent rushed up to me and, in his broken English, asked if the very attractive woman with him could get in the car for a picture. He had designed the bag she is holding and appeared to be touring with her and a photographer to promote the bag. I said fine and stood with my hand on the door handle to open it for her to get in. Well, she just stood some distance away while the photographer aimed his camera at me and the car for some time. I thought he was taking a picture of me so I stood there and posed. Then the woman walked gracefully into the shot and approached me with pleasant greeting and I realized the photographer was filming the event. So, I played along, opened the door, she climbed in, always keeping the bag toward the camera. I shut the door and backed away as the photographer panned up from her and the car to the tower above. The little guy asked if he could send me the video so I gave him my business card and he gave me his, totally in Italian. A most interesting experience.

Of course, we saw many a cable car. This one right at the top of Russian Hill where we start down the switchbacks. I drove along with some in the video.

Looking north from that spot Alcatraz could be seen out in the bay.

After a drive along Fisherman's Warf (shown in the video) we left San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge, also in the video, and took some final shots of the bridge and San Francisco from the other side of the bay.

From there we continued on to Reno and stayed there for the night. The next day we drove across "The Loneliest Road in America", U.S. Highway 50 across Nevada, one of my favorite drives, previously reported here: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120098

When we pulled into the garage late that night after 5 days of travel the mileage totaled 1,932 miles. The only mechanical problems were that, after driving the first day along the coast with the engine always spitting and sputtering at low RPM's, I finally decided to try retarding the timing from full advance that I run up at 5,000 feet and above where I live. It fixed the problem. The only other problem was that the dashboard clock stopped on the third day . . . for a day, then started up again then next day. Go figure.

The thing I will miss most about that trip is the power I felt under the gas pedal at that elevation. It was amazing and so fun. It was like I'd added a few cylinders to the engine.

The thing that I hated the most about the trip was the California freeways. I don't like driving the old car on freeways anyway, much prefer the back roads, but I drive the freeways in Utah regularly. The difference between the California freeways and the Utah ones is not the speeds nor the heavy traffic, we have those in Utah. It is the designs of the California freeways to always be turning and going up and down. It is much easier on a nice straight freeway to just keep the car on a straight course rather than having to constantly fight momentum to keep in the lane on a fast curve, especially surrounded by cars speeding along right close trying to do the same.

I decided to lighten things up a bit at night be placing my magnetic reflectors thus:

Hopefully, most people were amused and smiled back at Old Henry when they passed. One guy was not. He pulled up behind in a new Corvette, pulled up to the side, revved his engine so I could hear his customized dragster exhaust, and sped off angrily, pulling all kinds of aggressive, road rage stunts on down the road.

Henry, now you know where I live! Good trip, enjoyed the pics!

........Next time go from here to Canada, Not to disparage the California coast, but Highway 1 through Oregon has what California would love to have!

That will be our anniversary trip next June - from San Francisco up to Newport, Oregon.

Henry, great pictures and video. I hope to someday have my 48 in as reliable condition as yours is. As I am going to have to replace tires soon I am wondering what kind yours are, about how many miles are on them, bias or radial, tubed or not. Your posts and pictures are the best.

My tires are stock 6.00-16 bias ply B.F Goodrich Silvertowns made by Coker but I get them from Summit Racing to save the shipping Coker charges. They have inner tubes. I get about 20,000 miles out of them. These are fairly new with about 5,000 miles on them.

That light house looks just like the subject in a famous Edward Hopper painting. It's probably a B & B now.

Hopper's painting was actually the Two Lights Lighthouse on Cape Elizabeth in Maine.

His painting:

The actual lighthouse:

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse is actually a Hostel with 4 buildings to accommodate up to 60 people. More info here: http://www.norcalhostels.org/pigeon

I live in NY but both my son's went to College in CA, one up in Humbolt and one in LA. My wife and I made that trip a dozen or so times in a modern car and never saw it all, there is so much to see! Brings back great memories. Can't wait to do it again someday, thanks for posting your great pictures.

That is a worthy goal. We took all 10 of our kids in the 15 passenger van to all states that we could drive to (all but Hawaii). What a ride!

So that's what it looks like! Made the same trip 8 years ago from Encinitas to S.F. Fog all the way from Santa Barbara to Big Sur. Never saw nuttin' Went out to Alcatraz. If you want to experience eerie stand next to the water tower with its loose sheet metal bending in the wind sounds like two cats in a burlap sack...Bill

We had the same experience many years ago climbing to the top of Moro Rock in King's Canyon and it so foggy we could hardly see each other, much less the grand vistas usually visible from up there.

Nice video. My wife and I drove that road a few years ago in a Mazda Miata. It seems the scenery went by a bit faster on that trip. Next year you'll be in my neck of the woods then. Thanks for sharing.

The worst of it went away after replacing the spark plug wires and very worn inner distributor cap and rotor. The problem came back with a vengeance when I got down to lower elevations and plagued me for a day and a half before thinking it might have something to do with timing. I run my distributor and mechanical advance vacuum brake all the way advanced up at 5,000 feet and above where I live and mostly drive. When I finally stopped and took 5 minutes to retard the timing back to normal the problem went away again and I had so much power I couldn't believe it. It came back again a little bit when I got back up to higher elevations and home. I opened up the distributor and examined it and the rotor.

There was obvious signs of the rotor rubbing on the terminals. I consulted with Jim at Bubba's and filed the end of the rotor down just slightly to smooth it off and keep it from rubbing. I also adjusted the vacuum brake to retard the advance earlier. Those things seem to have all but eliminated the problem. It's still there just slightly on a long hill climb but hardly noticeable and certainly not enough to fuss about any more.

One thing neither Jim or I could figure out is the red powder in the distributor cap. I thought it might be from the posts but he didn't think so. I cleaned it all out before re-installing just in case it was metallic and could provide a path for spark to stray.

Old Henry, You have once again provided some great pictures of your drive up Highway 1 in California. Just as well you didn't plan this trip in June, as that is when the fogs come in. The locals call it the "June Gloom". The attached pictures were taken in June 2013. The fog really spoils this great scenery at this time of year.

As far as Hearst's Castle, I'm not a big fan of Mediterranean architecture and sculpture, which he loved and loaded his place with. I figure he did about the same as some of our barners do that love flatheads, load their places with them. I've often said when touring huge houses of dead men, "If you want to build a monument to yourself that will last forever and preserve your memory to the world for all time, build the biggest, most unique mansion that you can afford." Looks like it worked pretty well for him. Personally, I'd rather tour the ancient medieval castles of Europe and the British Isles myself.

Didn't go through Solvang. Stuck right on Highway 1 the whole way.

With Pepe along, we pretty much stick to Motel 6. They actually cater to pet travelers - reserve the ground floor for them, and always welcome them with no extra charge. Plus, they're usually as cheap or cheaper than any where else in town.

Thanks.
I only saw three other vintage cars on the trip - one 1959 Austin/Healy bug-eyed Sprite totally cherried out, with two Chihuahuas on board, going my way that I visited with at one stop for a while. And a couple of 50's customized coming the other way.

That takes me back to a two week tour I took singing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir one June years ago. One of our stops was at the Golden Gate National Park on the south side to film the choir with the bridge in the background for a DVD that we were doing for the National Parks Service. We sat there for 5 hours waiting for the fog to clear then finally gave it up and let the techies add the bridge without fog in the studio. Here's the rest of that story: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/6...ir.html?pg=all

The choir waiting for the fog to lift:

The bridge during the 5 hour filming session:

Sure hope we have better luck driving Highway 1 north from San Francisco to Newport, Oregon next June.

In southern California we have May gray, as well as June gloom. In the early 1960's you could see San Diego from 26th street in San Pedro, and Catalina Island year round.

What I like the most from your trips is your honesty about car problems and how the car actually drives. I know exactly what you were saying about the Calif. freeways and how the car handled. Like you, I don't mind the speed to much, I do get more nervous around the fast drivers anymore but keeping the car going straight with the old steering, it makes me uneasy just trying to stay in my lane. I guess I've grown to old for the long trips in old cars. My best trip was from Washington state to Missouri in a 40 Ford sedan, that was a great trip, real straight roads pretty much. It took us 3 and a half days to get here, one shock bolt dropped out and a semi slowed down to show me a card that said my shock was dragging the road. I like the trips but I like doing it in an old hot rod these days, they just steer so much easier. Thanks so much for sharing with everyone, your stories are what I enjoy the most on the Ford Barn.

Thank you for recognizing my prime directive - "Tell it like it is." I tell every problem and especially my personal mistakes hoping that someone who is having doubts about getting out and having fun on the road with their car will say, "Heck, if that bumpkin in that heap can have all that fun and make it back alive, maybe I can too."

There's another common-sense "prime directive" floatin'-around out there, too. Take a guy like JM35 SEDAN. He most-assuredly has never come-across as a "bumpkin" when it comes to anything he's done with his old stock '35 sedan. Not one aspect of that car that John hasn't righteously addressed and properly taken care of to assure that it's ROADWORTHY. JM's demeanor just won't allow him to "rig" or "hack" things together. No way that any reasonable enthusiast could begin to consider John's car to be a "heap". There's no question that John puts the miles on that rig. I'm sure that John has little in the way of doubts about getting out and having fun, nor that his sedan will be making it back home in RELIABLE fashion. DD

After the Italian designer, Massimo Tevarotto, was finished using me and Old Henry in his promotional video at Coit Tower he asked if I'd like to see the movie when it was done. I said yes and gave him my business card to email it or a link to it to me. He gave me his.

Today I checked out his web site and his history in designing women's jewelry and accessories. It was pretty interesting: http://www.eldoge.it/ He certainly had a photogenic model/actress with him.

Very fine videos, especially the one on the streets of San Francisco. As the owner of a 39 with non functioning brakes and a weak ignition coil I don't even want to think of driving those streets in mine.

It was pretty much the same as all freeways. I was in the far right lane between 60 and 65 mph while everyone else sped by at whatever speed. Fortunately it was cold enough to drive with my windows closed so it wasn't quite as noisy as usual with the cars speeding by. That's one of the main things I don't like about freeways and avoid them as much as possible. That's why I left I-80 at Reno and took US 50 home. It's an old two-lane dubbed "The loneliest Road in America". I love it.

I'm afraid not. I lived in Las Vegas and never even entered a casino except on my business. It's not my kind of entertainment although millions love it. I have eaten in the huge buffets before. They are amazingly good for the fairly low price they charge.

Although I had no interest in driving through Las Vegas on my trip and would have just as soon passed it by, I figured there may be some barners who may never have been there. It is quite a sight to see. So, I drove the whole length of the strip with camera running. I didn't include it in my story because that really wasn't the focus of my trip. But, since someone has inquired, here's a little two minute clip just to give a glimpse of what it's like: https://youtu.be/MUI84C2pnsY

And a snapshot of the first frame of the video:

Well that's Las Vegas off my bucket list! Love the 360 shot at the stop light they all must have thought you had lost it but then it's Las Vegas right. Standing on the running board and shooting at the same time was a true Vegas stunt. Everyone gonna watch the video now!! LOL..Bill

That would be a trick, standing on the running board filming while driving at the same time. Actually, here's what I use to video while driving:

It is a telescoping monopod (that's a one legged tripod) with a small cheap plastic level taped to it.

I screw the camera onto the mount just to where it is on the same plane as the level. Note that the carrying strap for the camera and monopod are tied together so that they don't flap in the wind and fly into the frame of the video when filming behind while driving.

Then I rest the monopod on the window sill braced against the top of the window and hold it with my left hand while driving.

Because the level is on the same plane as the camera I know where the camera is pointing by the level position even though I can't see the camera. And, I can keep the camera level pointing any direction by glancing at the bottom bubble which I can see any direction the camera is pointing. That's how I kept the camera level when the car was climbing the 28% grade on Lombard street.

Inside the car I extend the monopod a bit longer to stand on the floor rested against the dash board.

Just thought someone might like to know.

Wow! That would be my longest trip so far, even longer than my trip to Mexico in February. We might do it though, if for no other reason than to get one more state under Old Henry's belt. He's up to 11 so far. Oregon and Washington would bring him up to 13. We may just do it.

That is a nice drive. I took it in the van with the kids many years ago. If Old Henry hadn't already been to Canada a couple of years ago (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109872) we would include that.

Thanks for yet another great road trip, Craig. I'll add my 2c to the chorus, "It's almost
like being there!"
And "Now That You're 64", you must make the trip up here to the beautiful Pacific N.W.
w/ side-trips galore..
(Also loved your "Grow Old w/ Me" video. Twas our wedding song, you might say...)

I've been away from FordBarn for a while. Did I miss a thread about your MTC decal on the door? Looks neat!

I wanted to share something more than just about the car when all of the people came up to talk to me about the car everywhere I stopped. So, I made these magnetic signs for the front doors of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with me singing in it (4th down from the top on the right edge). It is a nice lead in to talk to them about the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and another testament of Jesus Christ - the Book of Mormon. Some are interested in a CD of the choir which I have on hand to give them and some are interested in a Book of Mormon that I also give them if they want it. It makes the trips all the more meaningful.

That is very kind of you Ron.

I'm cramming the memories of wonderful experiences into my head as fast as I can go along with memory joggers (pictures, stories, and videos). I don't know when I may not be able to make any more and will have to start reliving them, both in this life and the next.
