Default Oil pump replacement gears

The new gears seem to be made of sintered metal, which I understand is metal powder molded under high pressure and temperature.

Will the sintered metal replacement gears last as long as the original style gears ?

thanks - Jim

Hi Jim.

Sintered metal is porous, which significantly reduces strength. But it optimizes its own lubricity (which is irrelevant with an oil pump.) The load on the two conveyor gears is low, and sintered iron copes better with dirt getting between the teeth.

Conclusion: Milled steel is significantly harder, sintered metal wears less.

Ford Motor Co. used sintered iron to make the connecting rods for all their Modular family of engines. If the manufacturing process is right, it's good enough for our Model A oil pump gears.
