A question on '47 Ford moldings
Good Morning,
I have recently come to understand that the hood moldings for '47 Fords had some additional detail on the leading end and are not simply smooth. I am aware that '47 and '48 moldings are different in that the '47 trim is more teardrop shaped when looking a the end profile and the '48 trim is 'crested' in the center. However, I was never aware of the 'hash marks'/additional detail on the hood moldings. I have attached a couple photos of the hood moldings I have. Did Ford make both variations for the '47 model year? Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Thor |

Re: A question on '47 Ford moldings
I think there might have been a mid year change. I had a 48 vert & my buddy had a 47 vert & his parking lights were in the top of the grille area like a 46 . Side molding were different than mine as was the trunk trim. This was in the 50s so memory is fogged a bit. His a had two thin chrome strips on the trunk were mine had just one wide one.

Re: A question on '47 Ford moldings
Early 1947 models continued to have much of the 46 trim and the new 47-48 trim was not introduced until April 1, 1947. (per the 1941-1948 Ford book published by the EFV8 club). I have seen several 47's with the same trim as our 46. Looks like there also may have been some subtle changes between the 47/48??

Re: A question on '47 Ford moldings
I think it's pretty well figured out in the above posts. As you noted, 'hash marks' yes, and 47 'crowned' low, 48 crowned mid-point. I'd rather not see someone post "new 47-48 trim", as this implies 47 and 48 are the same, which they are not.
If you have access to old V8 Times, several years ago there was a multi-issue series of articles on the running changes from 46-48. Good reading for those trying to figure out why their car seems to have parts from more than one year. I'm unsure, but I would expect this same info to be published in the club 46-48 book. There were MANY running changes. More obscure trivia... look at the outside door-lock covers for 47, versus 48. Why did they do that? By-the-way, I have seen at least one report, both on this forum and in the V8 Times, of a person who has what he believes to be an original car, and it came with 47 belt-line moldings on one side, and 48 belt-line moldings on the other side. It would never be noticed by the vast majority of folks. (Typical Ford - used up whatever parts were available.) Last edited by bobH; 06-28-2015 at 05:09 PM. |
