Unique fuel pump?....
In the three videos below, the guy is able to prime his flathead before startup by manually operating his mechanical fuel pump with a lever attached to the pump. I'm not familiar with a fuel pump such as this. I think it's a pretty good/handy design. Are these fuel pumps unique to British Ford's? Are they still made? Do any of you have such a pump on your flatheads? I would prefer one of these as opposed to an electric pump....

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
Notice the accent of the owners, these are english type pumps, they sometimes turn up here in Australia,I have one on my 34 a great help when you don't drive them often enough,
With a bit of creative assembly you can fit that type of bottom with the ford type top. Lawrie |

That is great! I've never seen one. great idea for sure. He says it's probably military spec. I like it!
By the way, MART on the HAMB, who made these videos is a wealth of knowledge, with rear end rebuild tech articles, great build articles on his 33, etc. Great guy that MART!

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
I remember them from the late 1950's. Also the double diaphragm pumps for steady wipers. These most often from remanufacture companies. You had to have a core to get one.

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
The Military used them during WW II a lot on the 4 cyl Jeeps ( Willys and Ford ) GMC 6x6 270 in line 6, and a lot more. They had the lever on the side to prime with.

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
I'm wondering how difficult it might be to modify a stock fuel pump to add this same feature, and will these special fp's overcome the dreaded vapor lock?

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
Over come vapour lock? Nah, makes no difference if the pump is operated by the cam or the lever, it still ain't gonna pump gas vapour.

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
Nah, gas turns to vapour in a vapour lock situation, so no matter how the pump diaphragm is operated, by the cam or the hand primer, it still won't pump vapour.

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
Yes, I have seen fuel pumps like that but not on a Ford flathead. My Massey Super 90 tractor with Perkins diesel has a similar lift pump to supply the injector pump. Use it to fill the fuel filters and pump when bleeding the system after a filter change or work on the injectors. I've also seen one on an old Wisconsin V4 air cooled engine.
The video was interesting. Funny how well that engine ran on a cold start without any sign of using the choke? Any of mine take careful work and setting of the manual choke to run right when cold.

Re: Unique fuel pump?....
And how does he keep that flathead from overheating without a fan on the engine?
