Default 1940 Convertible Question

Looking at a 40 Ford convertible, but it is missing a few things for the top.
I've been able to find most things aftermarket.
The one thing I can't find is the panels in the back that the top bows fold into.
What is the panel in the picture that the arrow is pointing to called.
They seem to be missing on both sides.

I call it a "top well former". We do make it in fiberglass, it's not reproduced in steel that I know of.

What's the cost of the fiberglass ones?
Any pictures?

Very hard to find part for a 1940 Ford convertible. Thanks for making it available, along with all your other parts that help us keep the convertible coupe on the road and looking good.

Do yourself a favor and purchase the panels from Karl. You'll be pleased. The odds of you locating authentic panels is near zero.

Restoring a convertible of any year can be a challenge, as the bodies were quite different than closed cars. When considering buying a ragtop to restore, be very sure most, if not all, top parts are included as many are not reproduced, and if you do find them, they can be very expensive. When I restored my '47, I spent years tracking down various pieces, even though we operate a big machine shop. The car ran and drove when I bought it, yet the parts costs hit almost 20 grand.

I'm lucky I guess both of my 40 convertibles have them, but am missing the top well.No one seems to make them. When I replaced the wood I noticed that there was fabric sandwiched between the original wood,so I know they existed.

The top well in my convertible is made of fabric like the top material. It has a sleeve sewn into it that a stiff wire goes through across the rear and turns forward on each side . The wire has a loop on the ends and gets screwed to the verticals bracing in the body. The well came with the kit I bought from Lebaron Bonney.
