36,
No problem using the 80# sender with a 50# gauge. Your gauge will read
somewhat lower than the actual pressure...no big deal.

When I used a 80# sending unit on a stock 36 truck gauge, it pegged the gauge. When I found a 50# sending unit ( only available in repro in the last year or so) it shows spot on the same as the reading from a mechanical gauge.

The posts I have found in the archives here seem to be consistent with my experience that you can not use a 80# unit with the early gauge.

My experience is the other way around! A 50# sender pegged the gage on my F-1, but it works fine with an 80# sender.

that reminds me of an old used car lot trick of putting a 50# sending unit in a 80# gauge car, would show high oil pressure on a worn engine

FWIW, I have a 50' 8BA in a 36' pickup with stock gauges. Charley ny's statement describes my experience. I also have a mechanical gauge as a safeguard. Stock gauge pressure does run a bit low(for me). Mech. gauge shows 45# cold/ 25-40# hot, depending on how hard my foot is in it.

Guys,
It may or may not be critical but I have changed my truck to 12v neg
ground with a single reducer to protect the 6v gauges....in this case , shall I say,
you most assuredly can run a 50# dash gauge with an 80# sender. My mech gauge
under the hood reads 50# hot while the dash gauge reads about 35# hot. As long
as I see the dash gauge showing something decent I could care less....it's a
Flathead after all.

I concur with Charlie NY re his philosophy. Wanted to add that I reconditioned/adjusted the internals components of my '47 oil, gas and temp gauges and note that there are manual adjustment features inside these particular gauges. However, the amount of any adjustments may be limited. I also understand the heating elements can be rewound to accommodate repairs or changes i.e 6v to 12v .... just have to know what one's doing.

Thanks for all the answers. You blokes are very helpful, I'll have to post some pictures of my coupe, it is finally getting closer to being finished after 30 years of tinkering.
