Unhappy 1949 ford sedan hood cable

I believe the ferrule at the end of my hood release cable either moved, or came off. Thus my hood is in down position. I have tried reaching through the grill but my arm is too big. I have followed some suggestions, such as banging on the hood, having someone press on the hood while pulling the cable, all to no avail. I am wondering if I put the car in the air, will I be able to reach the release from below. Any help out there. I have heard all the wisecracks, could use some help. Thanks.

One of my greatest fears, been going to ask that question for a very long time here. I think what I would do would be to pull the bar in the grill. Then a person could get his arm up there. I'm going to follow your thread closely and see what the wisdom of the gray hairs on this
board say

This has always been a fear of mine as well. I got a length of appropriately sized cable and hooked it to the latch and put a loop on the end. I then routed it to a place behind the grille where it can be reached but not seen. Sort of a "belt and suspenders" approach.

Had that happen on my 49 wagon, and I removed the grill.

It only takes 2 hours to remove the grill from the outside. Ask me how I know. We now have an extra emergency remote cable that hangs behind the bumper.
