Default Seeking 37-39 rear brake drum...

Howdy Folks, Today was a bit of a minor set back, but my first posting.
In the midst of a body off re restoration, for the long tern driver rig.
I have been fallowing most all threads, doing close reading of many..
This is clearly a healthy and vibrant bunch knowledgeable fellows.
Sadly, I Just broke a rear brake drum for my 1939 C91 pickup truck.
If anyone knows of a still serviceable unit, please respond with source.
You may contact me here, or directly at [email protected]
P.S.Dozens of technical questions soon to fallow, I like this circle of friends.
Cheers ! Tigger

Didn't see anything in the Wanted section from Tigger about wanting brake drum. Nor did Tigger give us a break as to where he is located so those local to him could respond. Is Tigger even in the USA? Doesn't make me want to deal with Tigger even though I"m using those drums as door stops.

Tigger made a point in his PM that I must have been in a sour mood questioning his thread. Reading what I posted, sure seems that he had a point as someone that may not have known about the other parts of the forum and their uses. It is common for Forum users to not enter their location as it does not ordinarily pertain to the subject which may be of a more global intrest. When a source or a wanted request is posted, location can be key to the responses. Why bother offeing a part or a source if there is a great chance that the answer is geographicly remote? My fault for the slow pace in response? Not intended. Often in the past it has been the HAMB that gets a bad rep for harshness. Don"t want to import that sentiment. Hoping that Tigger can give us the whole story on his pickup and its needs. Good Luck: Fred A

Hello to Fred A. out in California, and the entire spectrum of Early V-8 Ford Barn crew.
I have been enjoying the hundreds of threads from so many of the talented, and very knowledgeable folks across the country and beyond. I am up here in the North East corner, living in Rockport, on the Mid Coast of Maine. It will be a long and cold winter here, so I am renting shop space and have completely disassembled my 1939 truck w/ a 1941 "tin can sleeve" 85-90hp V8, in remarkably good condition, except for years of deep dark sludge down in the pan and up in the valve gallery of stalk Ford iron intake manifold. "Hunt's Tomato Past Test" with a spoon, or a dozen if you wish... Yuck !
I will be taking this engine up to Walter DuPont of Gardener Maine, as his time allows & choice / discretion, of my removing the pistons/rods/crank/valve train and cam, etc.
The Cab & Bed and off Frame, with both F & R axils disassembled, and parts on order.
The 3.78:1 ring and pinion gears were very badly worn down, and the Banjo was full of fine metal filings, but no chips... A magnetic passed in parts cleaner yielded an "Afro ball" at least two inches across... that bad.
The four "Wide 5" brake drums could be re dressed, but not with modern brake lath tools, as these spindle / mandrel is an inch, and too big for the taper hub keyway...
This is how I broke my rear hub's cast iron brake, attempting to press out the sleeve.
pressing carefully, with heat applied.... BOOOM ! " %#*@& " So if you have one to sell, or a whole set of 4 real nice ones, with half life still there to be used for years.
The Frame is free of rust or damage, but the two cross members had been re fastened
with common hardware store all thread bolts, and fitted loosely... So I will be replacing with carefully re drilled holes, and reamed to fit Aviation AN bolts with the correct amount of unthreaded shank diameter length to support the frame and cross well, even if not cold pressed rivets from the River Rogue plant back in 1939 or so...
If the 41 motor needs it, it could be de bushed and bored out 20 thou. and get 8BA's
But if it is still OK, a new set of 11A will be plenty of power for my intended use needs.
I have completely rebuilt the 1939 three speed, as it had been a miss mash of parts, and simply would not / could not stay in second gear on any hill. A simple task once started, and satisfying to the test out. A Sue Mitchell's 26% gear splitter is on order.
This very nice lady is amazing to speak with, and I have asked her for a B&W photo
of she and her creative and industrious husband back in their best years and prime of life as they traveled about in many of there well restored classic FORD motorcars.
"Riding along nicely with the Mitchells" will be on my trucks dashboard some day.

This has been a brief summery of "1939 Pickup Truck" aka"Tigger" to my friends.

Hello All, I really appreciate any and all good advise given here, to so many topics of our interest, and just need to start leaning the thread social educate expected by all.
So thank you in advance for you patience and good will, including Fred A. for his reply.
By the end of a good day, the hands are darkly stained with old oil, grease or paint from cleaning up after 8 decades of hard use of this truck's history, but I'm grinning with the fun and pride of working swiftly and confidence of job's well done. ~Tigger~

The sources for the wide 5ers are slowly drying up. Maybe some day some industrious individual will find a way to cast some new ones. Corporate America isn't up to it yet for sure.

If you have a place that works on older VW beetles they should
know who has a brake lathe with 11/16" spindle as that's what
you need for the bug.
