I agree that sniping is the way to go, but I also see what Jim is saying. However, I think Jim is an exception in that he apparently never raises his maximum bid, while the typical eBay bidder will change his mind and raise their bid several times, which as far as I've ever seen, usually ends up in the seller's favor.

I think ebay auctions would be more vibrant if the proscribed length auction was allowed to extend 30 seconds past the last bid to allow for going, going, gone! It would be more like a real auction and suppress snipe bidding. I think more people would become involved in bidding. Maybe people could either list in the original ebay auction style, or the new virtual real auction.

Once I started using a sniping program my WIN rate went way up,and my cost went way down(12 years ago). You are right, that if your MAX is higher, you will win. If you don't know I am in the game, you won't be raising your MAX bid. As a seller I love people that PROXY bid, especially when two are bidding, but almost every time, the item goes to a snipper.

I found I had to use a sniping service if I ever wanted to win anything. For some reason most things I wanted went off in the middle of the night, and I wasn't staying up for that.If I placed my maximum bid too soon, somebody would cap it right off.I used Auction Raptor.About fifty bucks a year and I was happy with it.The only time I use ebay now is for a buy it now and that is only if the seller takes money orders,or cash in person.I actually got robbed by paypal, and it took three months and a letter from the state attorney Generals office to get my money back. They took a selling fee out of me for a Harley that I never owned, saw,or tried to sell.Ebay straightened out the bogus sale, somebody tried to sell a bike that didn't exist using my name.Getting GE moneybank (paypal) to restore the money was another story.

When I bid on something I want, as others here have stated, I make one bid, my max, if overbid I'll wait for the next one to come along. Just me.

Don't you just love it when you stumble on something that is either mis-labled, or in the wrong category. I know I've bought several things that I'm sure no one else had seen.

Vince, it was around $437. Folks were calling the seller "Lord of the Rings" and acting like he did something wrong. In that case I know that there was no shilling only two egos locked like two bull elk. To me the auction "winner" was the loser (he way overpaid), the loser lucked out because he didn't have to pay and the seller was just in the right place at the right time.
1931 Flamingo, some times a guy can't wait for another to come along. I know that with very early 1928 parts there are limited numbers of them out there so if you need a particular one you better bid (snipe) to win. Otherwise you may never get a second chance. |

As 29 states, if you really want to "win" you must use a sniping service, otherwise you are out in the open and it can get real cold real quick.
Have had great success with sniping and only use it when I really want something. Otherwise i just throw a random bid in and usually don't get the item. The nice thing about sniping, it takes the emotion out of the auction and you don't overbid.... |

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I win my fair share of auctions without sniping. As I stated before, as well as others did too, I throw out what I feel is the most I will bid on an item. If someone else bids even a penny more and wins then so be it. Bidding war? Never. I decided what I will spend and my first and only bid stands. A proxy bid will go to MY limit, and if you want to snipe with a higher amount then you won. My proxy will supersede your snipe unless you have sniped with a higher amount. That's what makes it an auction.

The problem with the proxy as has been pointed out is other bidder just keep chipping
away at it until they out bid you and then some body snipes it from them in the end. Bob |
